It feels crunchy when you press the buttons and the quality of the contacts is rather poor.

Could the contacts be a nickel brass? That might explain the look and the slight magnetic attraction.

It has an off-look to it with rough molding, and just gets worse the further you go into it. I don't think I'd want to rely on this of any application other than being a prop. Paint that box to look like metal and it would be perfect for placing outside of a door for accessing Neutron Stabilizer Room #6...or something. :D
