The Cat S61 detects virus carriers?

Bit of an extreme claim, but check out the video and tell me what you think.

https://youtu.be/le_iLjf2adc

I'm not cashing in on the virus, because I knew this video would be demonetised from the start (it's already been flagged as advertising limited - I fully expected that).

I just think that something like this could be a useful tool at this time.

The Cat S61 detects virus carriers?

I'd like that device to be built into a pair of specs, so as to be extra cautious of those around me.

Andrew Donaldson

Any chance you wouldn't mind sharing? Edit: nevermind, just saw Big Clive's next post

that explains the crazy prices I come across sometimes on fleabay - thanks Clive!

Stephen Eyles

The pub footage was filmed before the Isle of Man had confirmed cases on incoming visitors. As soon as there was one case where a non travelling resident was diagnosed with it the place locked down and the pubs and gyms closed.

Big Clive

Is that part of the transition period?

Mike Page

Oh I didn't know that. Thanks Clive.

Mike Hughes

I missed it too. Guess I need to be quicker. Silly people ruining it for everyone.

Glad I habitually download Clive's videos for my local rewatching pleasure. ;)

Oh d & b, missed that one... :-/

Stephen Eyles

Much love, brother Clive.

Michael Thompson

Hmm... video doesn’t work anymore :/

Johnathan Chamberlain

But deploying it on a wide scale risks violating the EU policy on mass surveillance if continued after the current crisis.

Mark Dennehy

Not necessarily filming. Just scanning. I did a wander round the quiet pub today and everyone wanted to know their forehead temperature.

Big Clive

They might have "parked" the listing if they ran out. It's not uncommon to keep a listing active while awaiting new stock by adding a zero to the end of the price. If they don't the listing loses its status on eBay.

Big Clive

That might be a good thing at this point in time. They don't have many new products.

Big Clive

That is the downside as discussed in the video. But it's still better than nothing if it prevents some cross infections.

Big Clive

At the point the video was taken the pub was open, but it has just locked down along with all the other pubs, restaurants and gyms on the island.

Big Clive

While your reluctance to attempt to cash in is admirable, I can't help but notice that the manufacturer doesn't seem to be shying away from pushing it heavily as a medical screening device for COVID-19: https://www.catphones.com/en-gb/

Mike Knell

In public you generally don't have rights over your image. Which makes sense. The principle is sometimes called "Right of Panorama." However there are some things best avoided unless you want to be lynched.

Mike Page

If people complain about filming their face, just point it at their ass and get a rectal temp!

Jim

Only problem I can see is that you'll have a stream of law suits from people you've been filming without their permission (not the people in the pub, I mean 'general public')...

Stephen Eyles

That is super cool. Wait it's hot. So hot you cool So cool you hot Hot you cool so cool You hot hot hot So hot you cool So cool you hot Hot you cool so cool You hot hot hot hot hot

I bought an infra red thermometer off ebay a few weeks ago for checking circuits in the same way as you use your phone. I paid £5.90 for it. I have included the link here to show the greedy bastard is profiteering. he is now charging £55 for it. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Infrared-Thermometer-Non-contact-Digital-Infrared-Thermometer-Infrared-W3M6/133295978159?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

I find it amazing how accurately the body controls its temperature. A useful test. The problem with this virus is that for a few days a person may have no symptoms.

Keith Lambell

Buy shares in Cat before you post. As all the nutters will run out to buy them!

Oddly specific questions :)

Wireball MacCarter

I seem to always trip the airport full body scanner and have to be frisked, damp shirt is what I think sets it off, then I have to apologise to the person checking me, I imagine there it is not nice frisking a damp person. I tend to be quite "damp" below the belt line but they never frisk that bit, there is not much down there but I am sure it would put a smile on my face if it was a ♀ and not a ♂ John

John Harrison

Cat Scan Lab Test There was a joke about using a Cat and a Labrador in a vets and charging for it. My wife was disappointed she thought you had trained one of your CATS John

John Harrison

Excellent idea, I see no problem with it,

They've been using thermal cameras to screen for people with a fever for years, here in HK. Anyone who shows up "hot" gets secondary screening to make sure, and anyone with a fever gets quarantine treatment. The lessons of SARS...

PeetieGonzalez

I got an E4 and then applied the firmware hack that unlocked all the features and full resolution.

Big Clive

That could be fairly straightforward with a set of single pixel sensors to allow for all head heights with a trip threshold.

Big Clive

It was filmed in the run up to the clamp down.

Big Clive

Yep a thermal imager is the best tool. As if you use a standard IR thermometer , it can be quite misleading if not used correctly, you need to know its sensing area is a averaged reading over a certain area. and if you don't know what that is it will give false readings. I was lucky and found a Flir camera that was listed as non working and I took a chance and it only needed a new battery. Saved 1000.00

Charles Bruckner

www.peacentuary.com Have developed the HPC-E18 temperature measurement walk through metal detector, The function is when pedestrians pass through the gate, their body temperature will display on the gate screen. It can distinguish between fever and normal people by sensor quickly.

Andrew Donaldson

I see no issues at all with the technical side of the video as it is informative and useful re detecting raised temperatures in people. The pub scene demonstration may invite negative comment on YouTube since most governments have been telling us to not socialise e.g in pubs, clubs etc for some time.

John Russell

Out of curiosity, what's the voltage you'd need to down/kill a ~450lb grizzly bear that's theoretically attempting to attack you?

Ardeof

FLIR Also make some “relatively“ inexpensive thermal cameras that attach to android and iOS devices.

Lostngone

I have been through a couple customs points at airports where they have thermal cameras pointing at the people entering. I am always worried that when I’m huffing and puffing struggling with my suitcases that I’m going to trigger an alarm.

Lostngone

I like the video, its got some food for thought in it for sure.

Right. Seeed Studio recently have posted this AI-powered multi-person remote temperature sensor. https://www.seeedstudio.com/blog/2020/03/19/ai-based-remote-temperature-inspection-whats-happening-at-seeed-office/

My test on a large audience showed striking temperature differences.

Big Clive

I've not had a chance to test it on zombies yet. That might be the next stage of the virus.

Big Clive

Oh darn, you had to make it all complicated. On a plus note that will increase audience interaction when they all lecture me on my lack of medical skills.

Big Clive

Also useful for the zombie apocalypse when you scan a crowd and notice the people who are at room temp.

I thought about this a few days ago, what an coincidence. It depends if you can detect that low of a temperature difference. Also body thermometers usually calculate the internal temperature based on your forehead temperature, or in ear temperature. I don't know if this is a fixed offset or a complex function. But I assume the difference between "fever" and "normal" can be very small. But there totally is a way to tell differences, since china already has cameras that can do this.

just_noXi

I swear to God, this morning in the shower I was thinking to myself, "I wonder if you could use a thermal camera to detect people carrying COVID-19? Big Clive should do a video about it."

Ryan Steele

Thing is, anywhere from 20% to 50% (depending on which of the small-scale studies you think best represents the full-scale reality) of people who get infected with SARS-COV-2 remain asymptomatic throughout. They get it, react to it (spread it as well which is the problem) and develop immunity without ever getting a fever. You'd also have to do the mapping from temporal vein readings to core temperature that the non-contact infrared thermometers do. Mind you, those caveats aside, it's not a terrible idea...
