Apparently "flesh burning death lamp" isn't a clue.

Remember I made a video about UVC lamps and called it a flesh burning death lamp?

You guys would not believe the number of messages I'm getting from people who are buying these lamps to protect themselves from the virus, and haven't a clue how dangerous they are.

I've made a new short video about them for those type of people.

https://youtu.be/2T39BHvrHZ0

(Because apparently my last one was too long for them to actually watch.)

I guess this is a PSA message, so I'll put it out soon.

The situation is made worse by the Chinese sellers showing pictures of the lamp being held next to babies and pets.  There's even a video which includes clips from my original video presented out of context.  Like the bit where I ran the lamp along the back of my hand and then announced that it smelled like burnt pork has been edited in so it looks like that's a normal treatment method.  It also includes a lovely shot of my toilet ceiling suggesting that you can just stand there and gaze lovingly at the lamp.

Apparently "flesh burning death lamp" isn't a clue.

I'd let Darwin's Law do its job TBH. No point saving the idiots from themselves.

An excellent 'Public Service Announcement'. For they'll stop at nothing to push sales of these things which are constantly flooding my in box.

Andrew Donaldson

People are dumb as rocks, he said while assembling his own UVC box to disinfect some items from shopping and google scholar'ing for any studies on the effectiveness of UVC on sars-cov-2. *guilty look*

Mark Dennehy

Ozone is very harmful to rubber, so definitely don't leave latex gloves in the same room as an operating UVC lamp. Other susceptible items would include speakers, headphone ear pads, elastic in clothing, etc. It would be interesting to see how long a balloon lasts in a room with a running UVC lamp.

I just took the risk to comment on their video so let's see how long before my comment gets taken down.

It’s unfortunate that the other videos are taking your video footage out of context, presumably without your audio on it. Maybe the video needs to have text superimposed over the middle of the screen saying “DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT” or something.

That's a good video. It's as clear as can be. Thanks for putting in the effort!

I have seen these used in high efficiency commercial air filters in building ventilation systems. the bulbs are usually located next to a white colored grid (titanium dioxide coating?) that reflects and diffuses the light inside the filter enclosure. This ensures all air moving through the system passes near an illuminated surface. The light is controlled by a relay on the HVAC system so that it is only on while the system is blowing. No UV light, of course, exits this enclosure into a habitable space.

The lamp disinfects things and kills organisms. Note: you are an organism.

https://youtu.be/oO9BiH9QCVc Absolutely unbelievable...between the young woman who is wearing a welding mask yet has most of her skin exposed to the uvc light and then taking the clip of you warning about the possible skin damage and ignoring that. Funny how they use your clip to show show that it can be used to sanitize hands and other body parts. Would not be shocked if they come out with some UVC germicidal "quackery" consisting of quartz "probes" for rubbing against skin or inserting into certain orifices to disinfect. Laugh all you want but it is the scary reality that we may see this come up soon on Ebay and other sites.

Far UVC discussed in this article, it is shorter wavelength UVC which is less harmful to human skin https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20200327-can-you-kill-coronavirus-with-uv-light

I've been squeamish since the age of 11 (1971) when I witnessed a 7 year old girl being run over by a car and killed in Cape Town. I remember trying to help but her head was just sitting in a pool of dark red blood in the gutter. The accident was outside a school on a very busy road. The girl had just run out across the dual carriageway without waiting for the pedestrian crossing lights. The lady driving the car was absolutely distraught as were several other mums on the scene and I was in tears. I had not realised how this affected me until I was about 13/14 when we watched a film about VD at school and I passed out, I did the same with the film about smoking and cancer. Your film about UVC had a similar effect, though I am very well aware of the dangers of UV light. For me, dealing with real life trauma and incidents is not an issue, I just get down and help, it is just when it is on film. In conclusion Clive, you are very right to point this out this danger to people. I would report the sale of the devices to your trading standards too.

Yes but because Clive is responsible he’s trying to fight China mis appropriating his video ... However yes some humans are too stoopid to live

An oven would work too as long as the temperature does not overshoot too much.

Seriously. Thank you for making this. I don’t know who else asked you to but this is “bigly” as my presi-dumbass was would say.

Ryan Coleman

Thank you thank you thank you. :)

I can't get the germicidal lamps with built-in ballast in any reasonable amount of time now, so I'm buying the G23 and GX23 style CFLs and rigging things up. My wife is a doctor and they have a shortage of masks, so I'm making disinfection boxes. They have a warning label :)

There may be different glass tubes that filter selectively. The little 10V UV lamps are available as ozone or not.

I have a very similar UVC "compact-fluorescent" type of lamp, and it's definitely emitting loads of UVC, making my skin smell super-gross very rapidly., however it does not generate ozone oddly enough. Are there different bands of UVC?

Maybe label it "this lamp WILL give you cancer"?

Jrandom Bob

Good idea Clive, I have every confidence that with people panicking in the current situation that these are going to be bought and used dangerously in droves. Frustratingly for me, remembering your original deathlamp video I ordered a pair of these to build a (safe) decontamination box some two weeks ago to screen incoming packages and they still haven't arrived!

It's actually pretty common to find UVC lamps inside large-scale HVAC systems for office buildings and such. Couple of things to be aware of though, make sure the material surrounding the lamp isn't going to be degraded by the UVC, if it's steel it's probably fine, if it's plastic it will degrade and you'll have more than just ozone to worry about. I'd expect that since it's your whole house, if you kept the bulb wattage down to a sensible level you'd have minimal ozone concentrations. Ozone is quite reactive so I imagine it'd probably break down before leaving the heat-exchanger but IANAHVACTech so I couldn't be sure, might also increase corrosion in your heating system.

Jrandom Bob

If it's a YouTube video, issue a copyright strike and report the posters.

Personally I was thinking about build a box to stick outside the house for non-contact deliveries but chickened out. I do have a UV "mobile phone cleaner" but who knows if it actually has the right UV lamp. Have you heard about "Far-UV" that's supposed to kill viruses but not damage human skin (207–222 nm)?

When I was young if I found a box labeled "dangerous lamp" I would have opened it. Probably now too. You really need to lock these things up.

Mark Trombley

Any chance of a link to the Chinese sellers video?

A handgun would be equally effective against coronavirus... and its host.

Kevin Raymond

In the US, many of the suburban homes use forced-air furnaces with recycling. I was thinking of putting one of these in the returning air plenum, just before the electrostatic plate filter. As I understand it, this will kill mold, mildew, viruses (virii?), bacteria and small insects. If it's in a plenum, that's definitely a closed box, and I could rig it up so opening the access plate kills the power. In your unqualified (and therefore non-litigatable) opinion, would the ozone produced cause a problem? Remember, this will be going over a gas burner or electrical heating element.

Mike Bird

Well, if it is strong enough to cook skin and cause skin cancer it has to kill the coronavirus right? 😂
