Cool UVC table light (!) But very tacky inside...

I've not finished writing the description for this video yet.  I should really get some sleep since it's 8am in the morning.  It's been a long night of studying electrostatic precipitation technologies.

This light looks pretty cool, except you shouldn't actually look at it.  How long before someone puts one of these in the middle of the table at a party.

The circuitry inside is functional, but not exactly what you'd call professional.

Comments

They could only really use UVC inside for sterility, but if it's the ones that aim blue light down on your hands it's just a blue LED.

Sorry if it's been asked before Clive, but how effective are those hand dryers in services and pubs that have "blue" lights, they purport to be UV but are they?.

Keith Pawson

Looks very functional. What did your colleagues think?

Big Clive

You can build a higher power one of these using 2x 36W tubes (ÂŁ10 each off Amazon), 2x 2G11 sockets (ÂŁ2 each from CPC) and a 2x36W electronic ballast (ÂŁ7 from CPC) - I've produced 4 units in the past month for our office and others. If you mount the tubes at one end of a piece of 2x1", screw the ballast on one side, drill a hole and insert a piece of aluminium with a 1/4" UNC threaded hole in it, JB-Welded in place - that allows the whole thing to be fixed to a camera tripod. There's no frame holding the tubes in (or casting a shadow), so I 3D printed a clip that slides snugly over the top of the tubes to stop them from colliding. The tubes are cable-tied in place and the whole lower section is covered with a thick welly-boot sock (to hide the wiring). Photos: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1tBKb1000CcSMVm7EgOGMLccki76Bd2zO

Gordo

Got one on the way for the car.

There are some spectroscopes out there that use a diffraction grating and you put your eye up to it. Definitely do not use any of those with this.

Nani Isobel

Thanks for spreading knowledge and of course Clive Tones đŸŽ¶đŸ˜

Cerity

Very interesting! Amazing you can just buy one of these.

Michael Thompson

Is there any cheap way to tell what part of the spectrum a bulb is imitating? I did some quick googling and everything I saw looked pretty expensive. Maybe I was searching using the wrong terms.

Lostngone

It probably will over time. I get the feeling it's a short-life product.

Big Clive

I wonder if the plastic surround will be degraded by the intense UV?

Wim

Mixed comments. Some plants may be vulnerable, but others may benefit from low level UVC exposure.

Big Clive

It looks exactly like stuff I would have cobbled together as an experimental setup.

Big Clive

What about plants? Do plants die when you use one of these lamps?

Tim Albers

Functional but not professional, that's all the circuits I make! And programming LOL
