By request. A review of my daily carry phone.

Since it's a year since I bought the CAT S61 ruggedised work phone with thermal imaging, I thought I'd give my thoughts on it.

In summary, it's not perfect (no phone or camera ever is), but it's my daily carry for the foreseeable future.  It turns out that a rugged, waterproof thermal imaging phone is actually pretty handy.  It may well ruin the contour of your skinny jeans, but it fits well into an overall pocket.

By request. A review of my daily carry phone.

I got one of these a few weeks ago, it's a very functional phone. Now I"m wondering if it has a 320x200 pixel IR sensor like the FLIR E4. That would be a nice hack..

I've heard of techniques like this being used. Fortunately most modern phones have enough memory not to need an expansion card.

There's a hacky way to use the combined SIM/SD slot with both which I think you'd love! :D (haven't used it myself yet, but I've heard of successful cases) SIM's plastic coating is supposedly solvable in acetone, so you can dissolve the plastic and you're left with the chip and circuitry, which can be then stuck to the SD card and inserted into the slot this way. And since the actual connections are on the opposite sides of the slot, it actually works.

Yes and NFC.

It holds its price because there's no competition until now. If the new Chinese one is any good it will affect the market greatly.

That’s an interesting point. But wouldn’t it be both? The hair would still have a representation of the scalp underneath

Thank you for the review Clive 😍

Flashlight? I though it is a torch. ;-)

That phone sure holds its value, £750-£800 at the moment. I wonder how its air quality sensor manages to work without salt, dirt, etc. clogging up the sensing holes.

I know that you got a bad reaction when you said you could use the phone to find people with fevers, but Cat's own site demonstrates doing just that.

Just a thought - when you were up on the gantry sensing the audience heads - were you detecting bald people, rather than those with an elevated temperature? Interesting feature on a phone. A worthwhile improvement would be a more accurate laser measuring feature, accurate to about 1mm.

Man oh man that is a very nice phone. It actually DOES stuff! It really is practically a Tricorder.

Michael Thompson

Does it have any built-in Bluetooth?
