Pre-stream refurb of old 50 LED DIY lamp (8 years).

Just before the last livestream I decided to give an old LED lamp a makeover for use in the background of the stream.  It's a DIY lamp where I just randomly decided to fit as many LEDs into a small base as possible.

Because it uses pluggable LEDs it's easy to refresh or re-theme the lamp quickly.

Do you guys want to see a full build of one of these?  It would have to be a Q&A session to pass the time in an otherwise very repetitive build.

When I ground the top off the Cree-style LED with a Dremel, the LED's dome is hollow and it's filled with gooey stuff - didn't expect that. I assumed these were solid like 'normal' LEDs

Clive, on a loosely LED-related topic.. Inspired by your bubble-tube videos I remember I had some I brought back from the states years ago, so thought I'd make some tech ornaments out of them. I bonded a Cree-style LED and 24 ohm resistor to the bottom of them, wrapped this in copper-foil (to make it light-tight) and installed into a small acrylic dome with a Qi charging receiver, potted in UV-curing resin. When stood on a charging base, it lights up and starts to bubble.. Check it out https://drive.google.com/open?id=1QjNf2IiLnoK5Raxk6GAT3pnboLtufPyW

Sometimes even the long lead rule doesn't work with a high output red LED technology that is inverted. I tend to test red LEDs before use. You can get three pin dual red or other colour LEDs for older signage systems. It was used for simple intensity control or double intensity from a single 5mm LED.

That LED flower is a labour of love - and user-upgradeable to boot. I always used to assume the anvil in an LED was the cathode - until one day I came across an LED which broke the rule. Now I use the long-lead=anode rule.. I bought two common-cathode 3-terminal red/green LEDs from Maplin one time - turns out both chips are red - so it's a red/red LED. Surely a manufacturing error? Thought I'd hang onto them in case they were worth a fortune one day ;-)

That would put it in series with the LEDs. It would need to be in parallel to the whole circuit.

Also as mentioned above, a parts list beforehand would be good

Robert

Would like to see a full build please

Robert

I'd of paid good money for one of those. Would even of considered getting some printed.

could you not have just put an electrolyte cap in place of one LED for smoothing ?

When I was lucky enough to score a Big Clive LED drink holder (with peanut) I did mine up with slow color changing LEDs and I absolutely love it still! I have mine plugged into an old USB phone charger on switched outlet so it starts fresh when the lights turn on and with so many color changing LEDs the effect really is something, especially the reflections of the LEDs off of the desk surface. The video doesn't do it justice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jc9Qzsph5os That's one trick I learned from Clive, and applied it to one of his own projects! Slow color changers are loads of fun to build into stuff...with clean power of course.

Sounds great Clive šŸ˜ i think that was when i started watching. Man how time flies

Cerity

Interesting to see the effect that light has on those RGB diodes. Very cool.

AESFTW

That is a good idea. There is lots to do at home all the time, but to take some time out and enjoy an interactive build, so yes . why not? it's not as if most of us have anywhere to go soon.

Yes very much, really like the led light in the background of the livestream and Q&A sounds great too

Build with Q&A is always good. Explain why led changes color in video for us dummies. I may scrounge together something to build. I usually just listen to stream and not try to read comments

Of course! It's like Clive Live Plus+ I like to feel like we accomplished something. If I build-along will I be safe from 5G death rays.

Jim

LED builds and Q&A are always entertaining to watch.

Joseph Rockhill

I never tire of LED projects.

Andrew Donaldson

Lovely! I still have my mushroom lamp it is great.

Michael Thompson

I love it when you do Q and A streams. I enjoy your stories you go into when answering.

I’d like to see a full build with a Q&A session

No, I want an O3 generator fabrication. We can enjoy LED builds when all the Wuhan microbes are killed.

Yes yes yes

I love these builds. Wondered if it could be done with a DIY 100 LED bulb from ebay. Make for an amazing display.

Sounds good to me

Yes please. Could you include a parts list before hand so I can get the right things together and make along with you?

Sounds like a good time to do Q and As as well šŸ˜‚

Mike

I don't think I could think of anything better!

Neil Tonks

Sounds a fab idea. My favourite type of stream.
