RCBO (mcb with rcd/gfi) fault. (With recording blooper)

Uh-oh.  I've done it again, and filmed a bit that wasn't supposed to be filmed.  The extra bit is me checking out the differences between the schematic and actual implementation.
It's from 7:33 to 10:44.  I'll probably trim that out the final video.

This device was sent to me by YouTuber Thomas Nagy, who is an electrician working in London.  He documents his working life on YouTube.

This module was faulty and with a very trivial fault that seems a bit of a waste, since it stops the whole unit from working reliably.

I'm going to reverse engineer the PCB at some point to work out what the white wire is actually being used for. The test trip is usually done by passing a current through the sense coil using an auxiliary wire and resistor.

Big Clive

I'm pretty sure the extra white wire is the test trip neutral connection. This breaker runs the neutral from the board, through the coil and back to the N bus, so you can't use the on-board N point for testing. The second white wire allows the test circuit to shunt a load outside the coil, either to earth or N.

Oke it Shows your are a normal human guy.

Are all the breakers setting and latching properly? Is one of them at a mid position or does one feel different?

Big Clive

Clive, have you ever heard of a partial failure of an integrated AFCI (arc fault) breaker? Just moved into a new house and after a heavy electrical storm, a bunch of led lamps stopped working ... but outlets still provide power (and the bulbs test out good!) If we can get an electrician in and it is the breaker I’ll send it to you for inspection. :-)

keep The extra bit in it let's us shine a LED on how you figure these things out

I hope these faulty units are being taken back to the supplier for warranty. I wouldn't want the costs just passed on to the end customer.

All good you know we don't mind

Love the video and the 'extra bit' makes it more fun to watch for me.

Paul Schuur

Don't shorten the video Clive! Mute that one word, bleep it out, whatever. I love your videos and the spontaneity is the best of them.

Yes, RCDs are great! After having a few trip for actual faults I'm all for them.

Nani Isobel

To think there were plans to *not bother* testing RCDs. When they work they're amazing.

Mike Page

Incredible how such a complex piece of gear gets bunged up by a bit of mis-molded plastic.

...and everyone drinking..,

It looks like you've uploaded an unedited version of the video as the 'one moment please' is followed by a few minutes of random investigation and at least one swear word.

I think you might be right.

I think you might have left a bit in there by mistake Clive.

Big fan of Thomas! Great video as usual Clive
