Teardown of a fake UVC corn cob lamp.

Let me know if I'm doing too many UV videos.  I'm always aware that if I do too many on the same thing it can result in subject-fatigue for you guys.

https://youtu.be/_EVw_AhPJ7E

I'll probably release this video soon as these things are all over eBay and amazon.  The sooner I get the video out, the sooner people will realise they have a plain light blue lamp that has a significant shock risk associated with it.

Teardown of a fake UVC corn cob lamp.

Comments

If it's using real UVC LEDs it could have some functionality, but it would probably have to be applied to a surface for more time than people could be bothered with.

Michael Brenkley

Looks interesting. I'm guessing it used electronic ballasts for the tubes.

Big Clive

That looks real, but pointless. The wavelength they state is a mercury wavelength and not common to the UVC LEDs.

Big Clive

Clive, Here's another I came across recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkKFGc16A7c

Scott Miller

Since you've been reviewing a lot of "UV-C" products lately, I thought I'd give you a peek at the guts of a 6' tall hospital sterilizer that I serviced last October. https://imgur.com/a/GL0pwkG

Andrew Sloniger

Some are being sold on eBay with a Remote Control.

Andrew Donaldson

By no means stop these type of videos Clive, apart from the issues of electrical safety, scam exposure (whatever the nature of the scam) is vital. Especially as youtube itself is full of scam videos (free eergy and the like)

Edward Parker

It might be real if it's using the square UVC LEDs that sometimes also have a purple chip in them as a warning it is on and for show. I'd have to test it. It wouldn't surprise me if they also make fake UVC LEDs in the same metal package or add gold-chromed "trim".

Big Clive

Keep in mind that some lamps can generate UVC without ozone. But if it was an LED lamp it was probably fake.

Big Clive

I suppose I should spread them around on Facebook to let people know they're being scammed.

Big Clive

You should get some agar and cultivate some bacteria in Petri dishes. Then try and kill the bacteria with the various lamps. Obviously they won't but then do it with the actual UVC lamp.

evilution

I agree with Mark. You've shown the real lamps enough times to be able to just run a video clip of them and keep your eyes pristine. We need you to be able to see the scammers in this world! :-)

Mike Bird

More worried about you 'irradiating' yourself with excessive use of real UV-C lamps during videos than the videos themselves. Would have been nice to see the results from the sensor with the real UV tube (not that I don't believe you) but I understand why you didn't (see earlier).

Mark Gray

Have been posting the Public YT Videos on the dangerous UVC side on my Facebook and other Social Media profiles to raise awareness. Always interesting to watch your disassembly videos regardless of content. Maybe just intersperse UVC ones with other videos at least of the fake variety. Seems like you are doing that on YT anyway. Cheers

Robert

Each one different in its own way, I do enjoy the videos regardless of the subject matter but always nice to see another teardown. I wish more people would take the time to watch this, understand the difference between the real and fake lights and heed the warnings you give.

AESFTW

You need to make many more calling out the fakes. Make Mary cry!

Aaron Nadler

I bought one of these last week from Amazon and could tell right away that it wasn't creating any ozone. Just got approval from the seller to return it.

Subject fatigue is always a possibility, but in the current situation this subject is more than interesting -- it could be lifesaving.

It’s not too many. It’s actually very psa. So many people are looking for ways to protect themselves against Covid-19, and these and dubious ozone generators are sold in huge numbers. Kinda sick this supply and demand thing tho. Idiots benefitting sells machines that was €99 before covid now say the normal price is €399 but if you buy now you’ll get them for €179 and you don’t even get a notice it probably will burn down the house and or will kill you for free.

Each video has added important aspects of the subject. You’ve covered proper types of bulbs, the dangers and the fakes. No it hasn’t been too much. I think the subject is important and almost warrants a two minute summary video as and public service announcement and promotion for your Patreon membership. I have friends with short attention spans that might benefit from a “Make UV Great Again” campaign. Thanks for the info!

Jim

Bring 'em on! I really enjoy these videos. They also serve a very important role in exposing these dangerous scams/products.

Hog Duske

I enjoy all your video's Clive, keep doing what you want and we'll enjoy 'em!

Chewie

Here is another fake Clive https://www.safepurple.com

I'm ok with your topic choices. ;-) The more coverage this gets the fewer people get scammed or hurt.

Phil Moyer

I'm surprised the real UVC CFLs that fit standard E27 sockets don't have a safety cut-out. This could be something like a microwave motion sensor that cuts the output and flashes a warning LED (or buzzes). Definitely keep the fake product testing/teardowns going.

Seán Byrne

Nope, not to much. It's a hot topic now, and the world needs to know they're getting screwed, and how to avoid it. Hey, we'll always give you "glowing" reviews! Lol!

Mike Cowen

So many varations on the same fakery. This one reminds me of the death star, just slotted into a frame.

I wish we could get the scoop on real & fake 18650s and usb sticks. I told amazon I would test them for them, but got no response. They need a test department, Headed by Clive !

Keep up the good work Clive! The word needs to get out.

Colin Jones

I have noticed Amazon have removed a lot of these lamps, maybe they have seen Clive's videos 😁

Private Private

Keep 'em coming. It's always good to push the message about these fake devices playing on peoples fears. My inbox seems to get a recommendation a day from flea-bay and Amazon pushing them - I'm embarrassed to say my sister bought one before I could stop her - she was enticed by the usual "rush now, selling out fast" mantra. Brother in Law not impressed either!

Mr B Shepherd

I enjoy a double check on the UV-C LEDs. I was thinking of making a UVC, or what the geologists call 'shortwave UV' lamp for my cousin, as he's into geology things. I also like seeing the rocks glow differently under different wavelengths. And making things.. Tl;dr - when I looked into UC-C LEDS they were very expensive and weren't capable of putting out very much light. Also for the geology, shortwave UV, it needs to have a UVC-pass filter, visible and UVA/UVB blocking filter. Those are _expensive_

Not too many–too many fakes. Mix in some that are on cost-effective (okay, 'dirt cheap') devices for decontamination, disinfection, plant growth (including high-THC , promotion) Also perhaps to repel UFOs, which seem to be a concern based on vids recently published by the Pentagon.

UV videos is the last thing I'm tired of right now.

Zac

Definitely need to get the word out, both of the fakes and the danger of real uv

Keep going. Real or fake, they are interesting.

I guess my ADJ Mega HEX Par RGBAW UV lamps would be able to kill all the gems too then.... xD if all the ebay sellers are to believe

Mikey

I don't get this fatigue you speak of. Bring em

Michael Thompson

He's got you there

Michael Thompson

I think you should do whatever is needed to combat these cynical and dangerous scams.

They are still fun to watch, as you publish a lot of other videos as well. Like the incense burner, CAT phone, etc.

~No worries, you're not doing too many UV videos, because those thingies do not produce UV light~
