Opening a cold plasma ozone tube with skanky PSU.

The ozone generating tube in this video is interesting.  Very simple and traditional construction.

The power supply is a bit rough.  It feels a bit retro, like an Oudin coil from the early days of quack medicine.  It is very likely to annoy radio hams.

I've just poured some solvent into the power supply to see if I can get it to reveal its secrets.

"Should we do that?" - surely the most rhetorical of questions..

I like that beer is making this experiment safer. A milder form of the last famous words: "Hold my beer and watch this!"

Remember, for shocking good PSUs only choose Skanky. Accept no substitutes. At Skanky PSUs, our motto is, "You might want to get your kid away from there..."

Yeah, they're not cheap at all.

This is most interesting to see Clive. Thanks so much for taking this apart. It might be nice to put a high frequency source on that tube. This type of arrangement is known as dielectric barrier discharge. Wikipedia has a nice write up about it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dielectric_barrier_discharge

You inspired me to look for an O3 detector, wow they are not cheep, even the bare board detectors are £60. !

Do you still have the used ozone generator you bought and featured 6 years ago?

Jim

We almost got involved in a project for automatic car washers where the water is recycled. Wisely, my boss got cold feet. Like a lot of power electronics there's no money in it and you're competing with Chinese manufacturers who will quite happily make specs up.

I was listening to this last night while cleaning up my shop, that thing sounded a Frankenstein movie sound effect! You should either have a lab coat or a bolt in your neck when you play with that thing. Catch you later Sparky

I love that glowy discharge effect but it is impossible to replicate. I can hide a light source and diffuse it, but that plasma glow is just so unique and awesome.

Michael Thompson

Yeah, the measuring of ozone in grams is nonsense. They just seem to make figures up.

My own belief is that low level ozone matching ambient external ozone is beneficial in homes as it is nature's way of dealing with some airborne contaminants. I'll probably be featuring a high profile air cleaner shortly and perhaps giving a controversial opinion on its real method of operation.

I really started to worry about you Clive with many kv's only cm from your hands, then you mentioned you had beer on hand, and I sighed a sign of relief. Because as we all know, alcohol tames down that sting from those wayward electrons that pass through the body.

Explosions&Fire had a similar unit to make liquid ozone with for good explodey fun. The unit quickly proved that even with an external cooling fan it is not at all designed for continuous operation and developed a nice skid mark on the PCB (@AU 240VAC). The rating of 3g/hr is also rubbish even with pure oxygen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dTV2oBaywg

Interesting stuff, ozon and negative electrons. If my understanding so far is correct, can I than say that: 1) ozon gets rid of smelly stuff for instance kitchen smells, but too much of it is hazardous for your lungs, and 2) negative electrons will take care of stuff like pollens, dust and other flying-around-stuff in the air? I received the little led lamps with the 15 kV carbon brushes and installed two of them in our living room because we both have problems with pollens in this time of the year.

When I first set up my website it was to address the issue that many technical subjects had very little data spread over the small Internet at that time. I spent hours scouring the tiny, advert-free and very technically inclined Internet back then to gather as much data as I could, did experiments, extrapolated the bits that were missing and then created a webpage with as much information as possible in one place. At the time my phone bill was enormous because of the long dial-up sessions. But it was worth every penny.

Clive a generation ahead❤️😭

I put a page up about ozone generation on my website at least 18 years ago. (Some images may be missing due to a current server issue at Photobucket.) http://www.bigclive.com/ozone.htm

Seems a terrible shame that clever electronics wizards haven't shown us how to build cheap, effective O3 generators.

Very timely: I'm interested in following up Tech Ingredients explanation of DIT ozone decontamination devices.
