LONG build video. (Maybe one for the weekend?)

This video also uncovered an unexpected Samsung glitch.  All phones stop and restart recording after about 30 minutes at 1080P due to file size requirements.  In this instance the Samsung also decided to refocus to a random position without warning when it restarted.

Fortunately it was near the end of the video and while annoying, it's not wrecked it.

The absolute biggest problem I had was getting the sections joined and uploaded, since it appears that this particular phone has a small memory by modern standards and no slot for an SD!  I had to move the files to a laptop via USB then put them back onto the CAT phone to allow them to be joined and uploaded.  It turns out that the Acer chromebook can't handle the file format, while the old Windows laptop can, but the Windows laptop crashed every time I tried to move the video to any phone's memory, while the Chromebook handled the Windows-massaged files fine.   It was a long night.  It was a reminder of computing problems of the past.

This is the Department of Villainy LED neon controller build with some of your Questions and answers.  Less Q&A than I was expecting to get through, as I also describe why I made certain design choices.

I wonder if the 30 minute limit is the same on cell phones as it is on DSLRs. I'm not sure of all the specifics, but it seems to be done on the DSLR cameras to avoid an EU tax that only applies to "camcorders"

Well worth waiting for the time to watch! Great stuff as always Clive

I could watch more of these long videos.

A wye-connector used to split a signal into two lines is being used properly; a wye-connector used to mix two signals into one is being abused and may even damage the equipment involved. Here is the rule: Outputs are low impedance and must only be connected to high impedance inputs -- never, never tie two outputs directly together -- never.

Clive...Sorry I Was Not Clear About "Why Not Wye."

Double Points for actually pronouncing my last name right, and getting the joke about the nickname. :) That is VERY rare.

Aaaaand finally I can go to bed.

I've only seen the engineer SS-02 solder sucker on eBay. The Xuron side cutters are made in the USA, so quite pricey compared to the generic Chinese units.

Which can ruin the actual weekend a bit. It's more special when you're getting some time off from normal work.

Still watching, at mosfet straightening fase now.. Hint: a ruler to push with from each side to bring them into a straight line easily.. :)

You do have enough information in that video to create your own PCB and BOM without too much work :-D (not really kidding here either -- even if you've never done it before and are starting from scratch, odds are it'll only take you a couple hours to draw this up in EasyEDA and place a $2-for-5 PCBs order. Pretty much any logic-level MOSFET in that package can deal with 12V/2A (and many non-logic level MOSFETs will work too), so only issue is the PIC code (I'd use an Arduino Nano clone instead, they're a few bucks each, are programmed over USB, and the programming environment runs in your browser, but that's me).

I'm a BIG fan and a Big guy too.... 28 years driving VW Transporters... Lush! Loved this "Long" vid... very informative and a key soldering lesson for beginners. I'm sure I have Zeron? Snips but the Engineer solder sucker will be on my next order. Do the Ba$....s at R.... sell them ;-) For me, more of these Clive. Muchly enjoyed.

the hexfets have such a lo on resistance they will make nearly no heat even at 4 amps each

For those of us who are retired everyday is the "weekend". 😃

Woo! Thanks for the heads up! I'll just save this one for the right time.

Michael Thompson

Although I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this already, could you sell this as a kit? Even if it was just the bare board and a list of things you would need to buy.

Neil Tonks

45 mins in and you mentioned ford transit. Completely agree. At 6ft 4 fitting in a car/van is sometimes a squeeze. The transit was just great. Very comfortable driving position lots of room for my legs and head. Wish I needed one for daily driving

Nice job on the build Clive, my only question is will the tracks stand up as suitable heatsinks for extended duration use at high loads or do you think that an external heatsink will be required?

I've just taken one to bits. It had the usual steel cups that go onto the carbon coated ceramic rod, but it had a solid copper rod instead. That does introduce two extra electrical connections though, so less reliable than a solid link.

Big Clive

I know it's a build video, but still a bit disappointed that you didn't take a 0 ohm resistor apart instead of going "I wonder how this is done" :-) (well, then I googled, found a million articles that didn't answer the question, and then manufacturer datasheets for "Coat-Insulated Zero OHM Resistors" (standard resistor design < 20 mΩ), "Insulated Jumper Wires" (wire in molded resin) and plain "Jumper Wires", all in bandoliers, so I guess "it depends").

I think the FAT32 limit with a 1080p video is more like 10-15 mins. Many devices get round the FAT32 limit by spanning videos across multiple files. Pretty sure it's the import duty issue...

I believe the Android's internal memory uses FAT32, which has a 4GB limit. If you're using a phone that doesn't have an SD card slot, then perhaps find out if the file system of your phone's internal memory is FAT32 - because this could be the issue.

Terrum

In phones it appears to be the default file size allowed by the device. They often manage to record just over 30 minutes. I'm not sure if that file size is perhaps based on the EU rule.

Big Clive

The 30 minute limit is about EU legislation - extra duty importing into EU if the device is classified as a video recorder. 30 mins or below and it's not classed as a video recorder. Stupid.
