Poopy McWitch and her Poundland treasures.

It's Halloween 2019 and time to take a look at Poundland's offerings this year.

I'm going to release this video fairly soon to actually catch Halloween.

https://youtu.be/h_BtBzg4kMA

Some wizard at Hogwarts is going to be a bit disappointed when this wand picks them.  It resembles a knobly poop with an LED on the end.  If it did actually come with the promised sound module then it would have to be farting noises.

It's odd that some of the features promised on the product packaging are missing.  I wonder if it's down to suppliers cheating or if the rather volatile value of the pound over the last year has required a bit of penny pinching.

The uncut scene was where Harry Potter's big Brown Knobbler was stored in the Wizard's Sleeve :)

It acts as a very small local reservoir of power, so when a sudden current transient occurs it is catered for locally. It also acts as a damper for voltage spikes. In this application it is probably to avoid electrical switching noise from the slide-switch from crashing the microcontroller.

What does a "de-coupling" capacitor do?

mikenco

Some photodiodes and phototransistors are packaged like LEDs.

A toy broomstick with a vibration motor in it did get recalled because it was being used inappropriately.

Hop ta naa. Manx gaelic.

What dialect is "hop to nee"

Charles Bruckner

The magic wand is missing a vibration motor, lol.

I meant to say that instead of impedance. I wonder how consistent the pull down current is.

Could the witch be using one of the rgb led as light sensor? I have a plant water reminder grasshopper that uses led as light sensor so it doesn't chirp while one is sleeping.

A CdS cell (cadmium sulfide) is a kind of LDR (light-dependent resistor). The cadmium ones still contain cadmium, obviously, which may be why the manufacturer left it out here (there are two holes on the PCB, but no pads what I could see). Not sure if there are any direct CdS replacements, but with a slightly higher component budget you can use a photo diode/transistor or even a LED as sensor.

Maybe the microcontroller has an internal pulldown resistor

Poopy McWitch Video has been watched it's five minutes later and I'm still chuckling over that name .

I thought the magic wand worked because you waved it and 1 battery and the spudger disappeared.

I have several sets each of the green, orange & purple that I connected together and put a usb (with a suitable resistor in side) to make super long strings. The orange is a particularly rich colour that you just donโ€™t normally get. Nice.

Interesting - very expensive! The name 'short circuit' seems very approriate.

The circuit of the last item almost makes sense if rather than a microcontroller, it was multiple-transistor package, using the pot to drive the base pins. It wouldn't blink, just be adjustable strength.

Clive I did buy you an exciting lamp while in Canada it cost $1.50CAD in Dollarama picture link below. After the 2 seconds initial excitement after opening I found it was a standard bulb 50w painted bulb that must not be put in a down light fitting. https://photos.app.goo.gl/UdYC5gZd5mPUjXGB9 So I did not send it to you. Fly catcher bait and bag device was also a bit of a letdown. Nice micro LED coloured string price increase $1.25 now $2 in the same store , https://photos.app.goo.gl/a49vGBXhYbkSRWpb7 https://photos.app.goo.gl/x1KYLK7y7LWfUjJX9 Just for interest, The cost of lighting is quite expensive here is a selection https://photos.app.goo.gl/Ymvx9AjqYwd2ThNU7 https://photos.app.goo.gl/Go6stQb1pRoswUPf9 This made me laugh, the cost, the name and it is intended to be RUSTY ? and only 3 of them on a string, I left it on the shelf like everyone else in the store. I recall alot of "motion sensor" toys sold around the holidays use a CdS cell. I guess people call it a LDR these days? When I was a kid we always called them CdS cells. Are they made without toxic heavy metals nowadays?
