Non-Newtonian gel experiment.

Having seen the use of a non Newtonian gel as an impact absorber I decided to make some and then hit my hand with a hammer to test it.

It appears to work.

This is also a fast and fun project to make "slime", which has a very tactile feel when handled.

I recommend getting some Borax (not the substitute) from eBay or your local hardware store.  It's one of my recommended stock chemicals.

Apparently Blu-tak fall into the non-newtinian fluid family.... known about these for years but would never have applied it to Blu-tak.

I thought "Mk 1" would be the first version of something? or did I miss the joke maybe? :-)

Stephen Eyles

I think I mentioned this previously but I run an actual X-Ray at work and had to re-name my hammer "X-Ray MK1"

Michael Thompson

I was waiting for the fake hand to come in and get smashed with the hammer.

Lostngone

You'd have thought they might choose someone technical. She sounds like an anti 5G campaigner.

Big Clive

The cornstarch version is much more fluid.

Big Clive

It's the technical slime video. No glitter involved, although I did add some gold mica powder to a batch and inadvertently made the WORST glitter slime ever. It looks beige, but when you handle it your hands end up covered in fine glitter.

Big Clive

Didn't realise my first slime-making video would be this one, but I think it was the right one :)

Was that borax (20 mule team borax)? Is this stuff similar to the corn starch mixture that makes funny shapes when suspended above a big speaker with the waveform generators? Maybe stick an oscillator in a little chunk of this stuff?

PVA(alcohol) is prepared by hydrolysis of polyvinylacetate. as wiki page states. just looked it up.

Might be nitpicking, but during my education as a jointer(furniture carpenter), we learned that (the wood glue) PVA is Polyvinyl acetate. :) If the other is Polivinyl Alcohol, that might be the difference as why acetate doesn't work.

Borax is dangerous, in microwaves it makes the magtrometer explode, it should be outlawed. If you don't believe me, believe industry expert Sarah Faye Pierce.

The Tinkering Shed

Fun video. I think the commercial PVA glue cross links as it dries when gluing surfaces together. I have also bought borax made up to kill wet rot.

Blue Peter sounds like a horrible medical condition.

Mark Trombley

I'll stick to the technical applications for it.

Big Clive

10 million subscribers suggest he has a good market for his content. People who want to see him enthusing about stuff. You can always tell when he actually thinks it's crap though.

Big Clive

You'd find out in the next video if my fingers were all bandaged up and black and blue.

Big Clive

It does pick up dirt from crevices, but a more elastic version might be better to avoid filling the crevices with loose slime.

Big Clive

Slime videos are HUGE on YouTube. Thinking of pivoting? :-)

Ain't science grand!

Lilla Gubben

Man, I hate that channel and that guy. Such a loud mouth shill.

evilution

Blue Peter still airs Thursdays @ 5:30 on CBBC. Just no more Valerie Singleton or Lesley Judd :).

Jesus wept man, we've had Big Clive Wires Himself To The Mains and now Big Clive Hits His Fingers Repeatedly With A Hammer. Are you okay? :D

Mark Dennehy

I have seen a type of slime, used to clean things like auto arm rests, and irregular surfaces. Is this the same ?

Interesting in regards to the Borax. Big Pharma at it again.

AESFTW

Custard powder with water. Amusing 50 years ago., but now we have the interweb to rediscover things

Demolished Man

Clive got the X-Ray out again!

Frank

Silly Putty. First time I found out out it was non Newtonian was in high school chemistry. That among other things got me into chemistry. Neat stuff.
