Inside a popular Japanese time switch.

Another item sent from Japan by Jerry and Rosie.  It's a style of time switch that is commonly used for street lighting and alleyway and stair lighting.

Simple to set and has a very easy to change rechargeable cell for backup.  I think this is the first time-switch of this type that I've come across with provision to change the rechargeable cell without opening the unit.

Good find. The search can be slimmed down to chronometry timer.

Big Clive

I thought that myself when I saw it. I'm not sure if it could stress the resistors when doing its normal spike suppression work.

Big Clive

I found this time-switch on eBay, Β£10/$13US shipped from China... Search "24 Hour Time Switch Chronometry Timer Mechanical Analogue Timer 100-240V"

Gordo

Clive, wouldn't it have made more sense to have the varistor after the inrush limiting resistors? (edit: I suppose if it subsequently fails low resistance, the resistors could overheat/explode)

Gordo

That's a nice little clock - most wall-wart timers I've seen drive the clock directly off the mains, meaning any power outages mess up the time. My pet hate are those digital timers where you have to hold down various combinations of buttons to change settings and select modes on a cryptic 7-segment display and can't even set the time once the instructions have been lost. This clock "ticks" all the boxes

skate youyrassis ffoffo0 Mondayu we all go to gkate rink and prekfit

I would have placed the voltage-limiting LED as an indicator light visible from the front panel with a "replace batt." label so you would know when the NiMH needed to be replaced. Now you have to wait for a power outage and notice the timer stopped working.

This really is a nice little timer -and I love how it sets with an analog clock too! The whole this is striking in its appearance quite smart looking.

these would be good in that room where there is 1000 watt lamps and a some nice big 🚬 plants thc

I'd guess 32.768kHz. It's a very common timing crystal that divides down in binary to 1Hz.

Big Clive

What's the frequency of the crystal? I didn't see it in the diagram and it's on the "wrong" side of the board for the photo.

Dustin

I doubt it. The NiMh cell will top out at about 1.5V and will then just allow continuous trickle charging.

Big Clive

Did you just say "Full Bridge Rectum Fryer"?? lol

mikenco

Once the battery is charged, will the green flash again ?
