Silent Department of Villainy tree test video.

The video compression is crushing the detail and movement a bit.  It looks a lot sharper in real life.

This is a bit of silent video showing the DOV tree running through its current program.

The erratic flashing of the star at the start of the sequence is a burst of random data to emulate neon flickering into life movie-style.

That is just Brilliant, I went to Blackpool on the last weekend of the lights (for the first time since the 1960's) and was amazed by them, BUT this is just fantastic- I just love that neon flicker as the Star "warms up" just so realistic and reminds me of the neon lights of Piccadilly Circus in London as a child. Well done sir- beats the hell out of the local town with their pathetic 2 million static cold white shite leds (lack of ) effort !!

It's unfortunate that a certain company in the UK is using low wage casual labour with what I regard as fake electrical credentials to install mass produced white crap everywhere. I suppose it saves them having to stock anything other than white in their vans.

Clive this one single light set is far better than the whole of my towns lights combined. They discovered cold white led`s about 7 years ago and just keep fixing the same crap year after year. its looking good unless your Baaaaa humbug or have photo sensitive epilepsy.

It's brilliant! And I love the strobing effect -- it's really intense!

I like these tidbits of bigger projects, keep them up!

Coil B

Very nice, very smooth animation (post codec, anyway). But where is Rudolph's red nose?

Mike Page

That's something that annoys me about Chinese stuff. They seem to use very basic and unimaginative software which then gets copied en-masse resulting in very boring RGB or animated lights.

Big Clive

The art "industry" is very inbred. You have to be in with the clique to be allowed to display anything in their prestigious venues. A lot of the technical art that is displayed isn't even made or installed by the "artist".

Big Clive

You should exhibit at the Tate Modern or even the MoMA

Demolished Man

The part when it all fades out then comes rushing back on made me laugh out loud each time it happens.

I toyed with running the warm white LEDs into the star, but wanted it to stand out on its own.

Big Clive

You might notice that it's a different random sequence every time.

Big Clive

About 1m wide by 2m tall.

Looks great but I gotta admit I keep looking at the dark center of the star expecting something to light up. Just seems like something should be there.

The neon star start up sequence is genius... looks very realistic... i think it’s my favourite part of the sequence!

Could you do a video comparing this controller boards with a similar one you made for carnival/fairground use?

Jeremy Impson

Top effort mister! 👍

It's so good

That is straight up awesome

Michael Thompson

It's hard to say, since I was just jotting code down from time to time. The software is based on a series of pattern modules with common variables like speed and repetitions. They are called in sequence from a master loop that also does a soft reboot on the processor on every sweep for long term reliability. Adding an ICSP programming port on the controller would have saved time, since there was a lot of tweaking of speeds and reps to get the best effect.

Big Clive

You outdid yourself so I'm wondering how you're going to top this. (I KNOW you aren't going to let your alter ego best you!) I'm curious about the programming effort: how much time did you spend on that part, and what ratio was it? Kudos! Makes me want to replicate your concept.

Making Blackpool look shabby. Now just have to make 200 of them...

Clive, what's the dimensions of the frame? Its a great piece of work!

This is what I wanted to do on George Square in Glasgow, but their decisions are driven by other factors. Hence the static flat white imported panels there now.

Big Clive

Pretty slick big guy 👍

The Tinkering Shed

Brilliant work. (pun intended )

Charles Bruckner

Looks great! Maybe try a short 4K video so we can get all the detail? x

Nice work sir

Neil Tonks

Nice one. Better than most council decorations.
