Ruff 'n' ready video about dielectric potting gel.

This'll teach me to remember to bring a decent recording device with me.

Back to my usual workbench and filming equipment tomorrow if all goes to plan.

Ruff 'n' ready video about dielectric potting gel.

It's widely used in the prop industry. I was wondering is a cheap source of the clear or translucent stuff was available. I find it in Chinese products a lot.

Big Clive

I've only ever seen them supplied on strings. You can get big acrylic crackle beads on eBay that can be drilled to take an LED. Translucent super-balls (rubber bouncing balls) work too.

Big Clive

It's certainly worth experimenting with. In the early days of blue LEDs I made some clear ones into flat top wide angle ones by grinding the tops down and dipping the end in resin to make them clear. I had a bottle of clear resin here (it stinks of styrene) and when I left it too long it gradually set in the bottle.

Maybe another question if possible: I'm looking for a very, very long time for stuff to clip on a standard LED, such as plastic clear stars, clear little balls, bees, just any shape. Nothing to find on Banggood, Aliexpress, Ebay, Amazon, etc. But this stuff is selling on all these sites as complete strings. Do you got any idea where I could look?

Today I ordered 1000 ml resin, super clear. Brand is Wilsor, a very known brand in the Netherlands. Because of the wet and windy Netherlands, I'm going to use this to rinse my solar garden lights electronic circuit with it. Could it be used to rinse the solar panel with it also? I'm not shure.

2 part silicone mix...which l think you wondered if it was available https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQ1A7ZjTsx8

I'm not sure what the constituents are. It wouldn't surprise me if it was a silicone based gel.

The audio's fine in mono and cans. Bit spacey in stereo speakers. But your hands are gloriously pink.

Mike Page

I'm definitely not going to try that.

Interesting stuff! What are the chemical components, as far as you know?

Paul Schuur

One minute in, and I thought you'd taken up gardening!!

I imagine that your samples are sticky because you left them to cure in the mixing cup. I've used different resins before, and many recommend that you pour it out of the first mixing cup into a second cup halfway through the mixing time. This ensures the unmixed component doesn't end up in whatever you are potting. Unmixed stuff will never cure / dry out (I've left it out for weeks). It's hard to do the double mix with fast cure stuff, though, but even just pouring the mixed stuff out of the first mix cup into the potting container will get rid of most unmixed stuff and yield a non-sticky result.

Make sure not to leave that lying around! Ralphy might think they’re Jell-O shots!
