Fixing a remote control socket.

If I told you that this remote control socket would turn its relay on when the side button was pressed, but would then drop it out again a few seconds later.  Could you guess what the fault was before watching the video?

Fixing a remote control socket.

Yep...

I'm just getting caught up and have not seen the video or comments. I'm going to say it is a bad capacitor, because bad caps run through my whole life as a self proclaimed electronics professional and enthusiast.

Michael Thompson

Is it a resistor? yes, it's a resistor. No, it's a capacitor!! :-D Product of a thinking brain, keep up the good work Clive! (7:54)

I normally lock the focus to avoid that annoying hunting. That way I can choose when and (usually) what to focus on. In this case I had enable autofocus for some reason and forgot to disable it again. When I saw the recorded video hunting for focus I immediately went to the camera and disabled it again.

Big Clive

I know you mentioned you were having camera issues, the focus hunting on that made me a tad dizzy

I did guess correctly, but it was just that, 100% guess. I didn't have any prediction as to why it exhibited that particular failure behavior.

I think it's a legal requirement in most countries. I can't imagine them intentionally using a different screw than all the others as it'd be cheaper to keep them all the same, but the fact that usually only one screw is different suggests that that's the bear minimum they can get away with and still be legal.

It makes me wonder why they use security screws nowadays. Almost every cheap set of screwdriver bits seems to have a small selection.

Yes, those damned X2 caps! I’ve got a set of these remote power points controlling my Christmas lights and they’ve all had an X2 transplant. Thanks Clive.

Cheers Clive, I really like this type of video content... We learn loads!

Awesome. I use these along with a lot of other Lightwave RF products with an RFXcom 433mhz transceiver and domoticz for home automation. They were sold under the Siemens brand around 2013. I have had 3 fail under warrantee with that exact behaviour and was worried about the other 6 I have failing at some point. You are correct that a long press engages the learn mode. As for the hole behind the sticker, they did sell a 250w dimmer version that perhaps had different circuitry. Glad I know how to fix them now!

I expect you haven't given the stinging pixies a generous gift.

My guess involved peanut butter and the Freemasons. Not even close.
