Inside an electric vehicle power interface.

I can't really call this a charger because all it does is enable power when it detects a vehicle is connected and then signals to the actual charger in the vehicle how much current can be drawn.

I was heading to hospital early in the morning for a small operation the morning after making this video, so I didn't go as far as I could have on the signalling circuitry, and I may sound a little bit agitated.  I may revisit this video in the future.

(The operation for a hernia was yesterday and I'm back home now.)

Back again with the Renegade Master... haven't heard that in ages.

I can hear the Doctor now....."well nurse, let's take him to bits!"

Back to strength soon Clive - but go easy with the Dark 'n' Stormy for a while!

Feel better!

All the best for a quick recovery Clive - I had one last year so I know what you're going through... Must have been all that heavy lifting on the Tattoo set! :-)

Stephen Eyles

Best wishes for a speedy recovery

Get well soon...

It's not British made I know but Wera tools are very very good. Allen keys have lasted 6+ years now and are in constant use. The driver kits are reasonably priced too. ATM I have a Wera advent calendar. £50 I think and you get a good little kit at the end. ( I also have a Haynes build your own radio calendar too )

Clive..... just wanted to say this: GET WELL SOON. DO NOT NOT break that hernia again, i have had three done and they told me that the next time i will be in serious serious trouble !!!! Let the missus do the heavy lifting. BTW..... cant afford to send you one but perhaps in the future.... have a look at the ARMEG torque driver screwdriver set. Made in Sheffield and wordy of a review. A Very Happy X'mas to you , the Family and of course the cats, life would not be the same without them .

Wishing you a speedy recovery Clive. Seasons Greetings to you and yours.

Ouch. Nasty surgery. Be sure to follow doctor's orders and take it easy for a while. Hope you are not in pain and back on your feet quickly.

Never heard the term "Granny charger" before. The charge adapter that came with our Tesla had adapters for the 115 volt 15 amp outlets and an adapter for the 240 volt 40 amp outlets. On 115 volts, it only charges at a rate of about 4 miles per hour but on the 40 amp 240 volt outlet it is a reasonable 32 amps which is closer to 32 miles per hour.

I suspect the ground is not connected all the time so that it can tell if any faults are on the vehicle or plug side. I have one for my car and it was able to detect a ground fault on the plug side and wouldn't charge. Fixed the detached ground on the outlet and it worked. I suspect it does a few tests for faults on each side before allowing charging. I think I'm mixing up the pilot and proximity circuits. PS We call them charge cables and charge stations here in 'merica.

Get well soon Clive! Hope your recovery is speedy. And an early Merry Christmas.

Oh fantastic. Resin potting AND a BGA around there. What an interesting exploration though!

I think you need to broaden your musical horizons. Haven't you ever heard of the band "Earth, Live and Neutral"? I believe they covered a number of songs by AC/DC...

Anti-tamper paint. To bend the words of the late, great David Bowie, "I smiled sadly for a law I could not obey..."

glad the op went well

John Catterall

Glad it went well.

If there are three wires and one is called earth the other two should be wind and fire. This is why it is so hard to learn electronics.

Get well soon Clive!

Good luck on the speedy recovery... Several years ago, our son had a hernia op, he was at that size and age that I used to grab him by the ankles and shake it back in..!! There's me thinking it was against supply regulations to charge an EV on a 13a supply, I thought you needed a dedicated interdependently earthed supply point.

Glad the op went well Clive, hope you get well soon.

Keith Pawson

Glad to see you are still with us. Speedy recovery.

Chris Hegwood

Aw crum, now you're not going to be able to do any lifting … , you'll hafta get a length of surgical tubing to drink your "beverages"–I'm sure that would be preferable to Ralfie coming over and holding it for you. Looking forward to any additional investigation you do on this. (The interface, not the recuperation particularly!)

Glad the operation went well. You made my day with the Renegade Master reference. It took me back.

Feel better Clive.

Mikeselectricstuff has taken a few of those apart and figured out how they work recently :) Edit: commented to early again. Sorry :(

Get well soon Clive!
