The Krampus lamp.

On one hand I could describe this light as dangerous because of the risk of an electric shock from fingering the LED holders or leads.  But it does remind me of our olde-worlde Xmas tree from the late 1960's where we had a set of 20 Pifco olive lamps with metal star reflectors which were held in place by the lamp itself, and didn't realise that the rather inadequate plastic insulator rings that separated the metal star from the live base had crumbled and gone over time.  So our tree used to be covered in live metal stars at up to 240V.  Awesome!

I filmed this video in 720P.  Not because I intended to, but because I've only just realised that was the resolution my new recording device was set to by default.  That has now been corrected.

There's a quick guide to making a safer USB powered version of the Krampus lamp at the end of the video for those of you with kids, pets or just a general lack of desire for a festive electric shock.

I have to say that for all this is rather "arty", it actually looks great.  Especially when it's in a lamp base and can just be stuffed into any matching lamp holder.

The fact that the LEDs can be changed means that it will last a lot longer than a traditional LED lamp, as it can be updated with new and better LEDs over time or just to re-theme it.

I did toy with colouring them with a Sharpie or using black sleeve.

Neat! Did you think of green shrink wrapping the white plugs? Safety and colour effect.

About the stereo recording: it's weird at first; wearing headphones it sounds like you're standing behind me, and talk over my shoulder and show me how it's done. Like a father that's showing his kid how to do eletronics. It's the only way I can properly describe it :-)

I had to look up what Krampus was. I thought it was a plant! I like it so much more now! The audio and video looked good to me. But, then, my eyes and ears aren't exactly HD any more.

Life's the same, I'm moving in stereo. That looks very nice! I suppose one could shrink some dark green shrink over the connectors to add some protection and lend some color blending. Krampus tree!

Nice

I noticed that. I'll be checking it out.

Love these light projects Clive, simple but very effective. Once again, thank you for all your content in 2019, life would be dull without you. Have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year. Cheers

Is anyone else seeing a lot of white fringing around the black lines when Clive's drawing his schematics? It might just be my TV.

Could you tell what is the thickness of the wire you used for this project? If it is possible in AWG and mm2? I have a variety of wires at home, but no single core ones (except for installations 1 mm2, 1.5 mm2, 2.5 mm2, etc.). For electronics it's mostly 22-24AWG plastic and silicone. I think I've to order some for this project witch is great !! I just finished a little project with some old meteror lights and they are shining in the garden on a single 18650 witch last 2 full days. The new ones I bought uses more power and a minimal 6-7 Volt. I don't like 240V in the garden so I'm still thinking about a method to fix this. Thanks for this inspiring video!

A 2020 project perhaps

I'm always pretty cautious about anything mains power. This one however I think will have to be made. Love the fact stuff did go wrong and you showed it. Too many YouTubers edit it all out and try and come across as it all went perfectly. Thanks Clive. Great video.

Every time you make this it gets grander and more interesting. How much longer until you escalate to making a full blown Christmas tree out of this? :D
