Walmart lights?

These were sent by Noah.  I think they're from Walmart, which is odd, since ASDA in the UK is part of the Walmart group and often shares the same products and brands.  But I didn't see similar lights in the UK.

The ribbon style is very odd.  I wonder if it's an attempt to make a continuous string that is very easy to mass produce in the same way as the increasingly popular copper wire and resin strings.

Prefer static

I don't mind subtle animations (I have been playing with WS2811 pixel strings, and those can be quite nice) but when it comes to the the flashing, I think I agree with your dad. That having been said, the old fashioned Twinkle lights can be nice -- We have a string of these that is encapsulated in plastic snowflakes that have a nice effect. We hang it on the curtain rod in the living room.

My favourite type are slow colour fading LEDs. I made my own lights for the garden cherry tree by putting a 2xAA or 2xAAA holder soldered to a colour fading LED inside various white pill bottles I gathered over the year and hung on branches. The only thing I wish I could hold of is a little 6 hour daily circuit like what's found in the LED light strings that run on 2xAAs. At the moment, those homemade lights run 24/7, so had to recharge the batteries every few days. If anyone knows of where I can get these or even a 2xAA/AAA holder with a 6-hour daily timer, that would be great.

Loathe, hate and detest flashing bloody lights. Most of my neigbours appear to disagree. Blackout curtains are good!

I never get tired of delving into lighting stuff. Oh, and I got a Cliff Quick Test for Christmas woo!

I made a chain of addressable RBG LEDs that I put around my tree, and I programmed then to do random red and green patterns, with the occasional rainbow scroll.

I always liked the twinkle lights, where every light flashed on it's own.

Walgreens (a pharmacy chain) has ones very similar to the "inverted hat", side-emitting style one you took apart, same 6hr/18hr timer, although the MC seems to crash after 4 days of continuous use (forcing you to pull the batteries to reset it). Very festive and low power, lasts well until after the 1st of the new year. $9.99 for 100 LEDS in "white" (not sure if cool or cold), or multi-colored.

Static every time. I have lots of battery powered strings about the house at the moment, all converted to use USB power banks, those little chips are highly tolerant and work at 3.3 or 5v. I don't use any of them on flash but I do ise the PWM dimmer functions, helps extend the runtime.

There are a lot of similarities between the different gaelics.

Thanks in no part to you Clive..... this Christmas has been a slow glow colour change R.G.B Led light fest so far. Made a new board for the Fiber optic tree with slow change rgb lamps. made a 15 lamp string with black wire and heatshrink for the tree as a little jazz up. the list continues and I will prob have them all packed away by the time I could list them. All the Best for the New Year , Fra a Big Yin to a Big Yin (height wise).

🎄 Happy Christmas big guy 🎄

I prefer steady lights but the slow fade mode looked interesting.

When I did still put up a tree I would only do one string as flashing.

Having spent many nights in the discos of Edinburgh, in the early 80's , I am all flashy lights outed. Still and steady for me, leds are brilliant, and so are the controllers that enable me to stop them going into eppy mode!

As much as Clive is doing with Christmas lights every year, somehow I imagine his house lighting up like the greenhouse in the movie "Saving Grace" every night in the winter time :-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eMYxkEtxlM

I've soldered a blob across the output transistors of my lights as they forgot the settings every time they were turned on amd the first setting was combination flash.

Merry Christmas Clive. Thanks for all the content & entertainment! Here’s to 2020

Merry Christmas!

Marry Christmas Clive!

Merry Christmas, Clive! I'm not a fan of flashing lights either. "Dignified" is definitely a good word for static ones.
