Babybel cheese-o-cution.

You wouldn't think a fatty cheese would be so conductive, but it turns out they put on quite a show.

The whole house stinks of burnt cheese now, and not in a nice toasted cheese way.

2020 - The year of electrocuting foods on BigClivedotCom. Don't eat it, electrocute it!

Sean M

Try using forks for the electrodes.

Philip Childs

We have those cheeses here in the United States. I can't say I've made them live at mains voltage, but maybe I shall now. :)

Brendan Meteer

How about circular plates on each face. Turn the whole thing into a cheesy capacitor! Sort of thing ....

pmsl the "Cliff quickcheese" patent pending lol

Ahhh! That's where the guy got the idea for neon lights from then... Babybel neon cheese!!

I'm now wondering what parts of a blender may produce explosive results when electrocuted.

Mark Gray

I may have over boosted the audio. I'll tame it back in future videos. The native recording level is surprisingly low even with an external microphone.

Big Clive

Probably the exposure/integration time of the camera went up to compensate for the low light and so each frame is more likely to pick up the flashing light from the HOPI. In old-fashioned photography terms you could think of it like the shutter speed was slower.

I’m getting a very “will it blend” vibe from this “can I electrocute it” series of videos :-) Ewen

Ewen McNeill

you have to try more types of cheeses.

Western Canadian Guy

I wonder, what would happen with something like stilton. How would the conductivity of the mould veins make a difference, and what sort of light show would that put on?

GL_1_Code1_1A

Hi Clive, just wanted to say thank you for all the great videos this year! FYI: the sound in this video sounds clipped or distorted at several times, perhaps too much gain on the microphone, if it's controllable at all?

Paul Schuur

When you turned the light off Clive, the HOPI display more or less stopped flickering but started again when the light went on. Is this an optical effect or is there something electrical going on?.Any comments

Edward Parker

The power factor isn't great.

evilution

Iput a huge pickle in the hot dogger, but it was in a livestream.

Big Clive

We do have Babybel here in the US - even at discount stores like Target. They also come in many varieties - though I've never seen the melting dish in US packages. I buy these for my kids' school lunches.

Thank you for your snackrifice, Clive, and I too would appreciate a re-do with the wax intact.

Justin Smith

Sorry Clive, that Baby Bel is nothing like real Dutch Edam. For one, it is made in France. Baby Bel is relatively soft, whereas Dutch Edam is semi-hard, and ages well.

Rocco Rizzo

'Murican style cheese is not cheese, it is officially called "pasteurized process cheese food." As a matter of fact the product called "Kraft Singles" has no cheese whatsoever in it, whereas others have a very small amount of actual cheese in them.

Rocco Rizzo

Have you already tried to electrocute pickled gherkins? They should give a nice night lamp... and you could use the hotdogger as a fitting.

Stephan

I think light cheeses in general don't flow very well, because of the lower fat content.

Chris Crowther

I wonder how melty an american-style cheese would do. Has emulsifiers or somesuch in it to make it melt better, IIRC.

Roland Roberts

Can you 'fry' some high iron content foods to compare the results? I reckon the reason the hotdogs heat so well is partly iron and partly salt/water content. It would be interesting to see what happened to spinach soup (I'd suggest red meat but I'm veggie!).

The Tinkering Shed

It would’ve been interesting to see what happens if you leave the cheese in the wax cover. Maybe even some pressure building up?

When at school, did you ever imagine you'd get paid for just effing about? Keep it up! :D

mikenco

Is there an electrical symbol for cheesistor I should know about?

Jim

I'm so disappointed you didn't try electrocuting it inside the wax coating.

David Glover-Aoki

Theoretically it shouldn't be a factor on AC, but I wonder if people are less thorough about tightening the neutral connection because it's "the safe one".

Big Clive

The Holy Baby Cheezus was in my mind when making the video.

Big Clive

Will the manufacturers never lean, if you write “light” on your products, Clive will liven them up to try and see if they emit in the visible spectrum...

Well I know how I'm breaking in my new Cliff Quick Cheese! :D

Michael Thompson

Liking the current trend for electrocuted foodstuffs. Was more effective than I expected but electrocuted gherkin is still the champion.

Mark Gray

Interesting that the neutral wire was the sparky end on the second one, couldn't tell from the first one. I have observed this phenomenon with shower cables, if someone has upgraded their shower without uprating the cable it always seems to be the N wire which melts, same if the switch connector is just not torqued properly, it always seems to be on the blue core. I've even seen one which caused a house fire and again the majority of the heat damage was up the blue side of the twin & earth. Have you noticed this and if so do you know why? I've seen dozens and not a single brown side melt (except the house fire one).

The Tinkering Shed

The cheese isn't entirely resistive, it will have a slight dielectric effect so there will be capacitance there, much like human bodies do.

The Tinkering Shed

It feels appropriate to celebrate the baby cheeses this time of year! :)

Nils Normann

Why doesn’t it have a power factor of 1? Surely it’s a resistive load? Also, after years of watching a flickery HOPI, we finally get to see it as nature intended when the light was switched off and the exposure increased :)

Reminds me of the Green Mile :)

Brilliant video! They really are disappointing when ‘melted’ in the microwave though

Adam Pepper

I notice that your cheese is the ‘light’ version which is much more rubber than cheese. I wonder if the full fat babybel would pass more current having a higher fat content? Keep up the electrocuting thing, it’s quite interesting! :D
