It turns out that when you light the hydrogen and oxygen being liberated from a chemical ration heater it does indeed go boom and also keeps burning because it's making its own fuel.  That's why I suddenly squeezed the pack and folded the end after the test.

Was not expecting a video on Lithuanian MRE's! Being half Lithuanian myself it made for a very interesting video. Half the stuff in the pack I buy from the shops when I'm there visiting family... The Ruta chocolate is a popular brand and delicious, the honey is classically crystallized, and those matchsticks I've used for years lighting BBQ's. Also, that Chicken Stu looks like something my gran would make, however hers is probably better than that dry food ration :D

It would have to have a flashback arrestor mesh, since the oxygen and hydrogen are already combined. There have been a few incidents with Brown's gas electrolytic generators as used by jewellers for their micro torches and experimenters.

A little metal tube, perhaps the cut off needle from a syringe, stuck into the bag as the gas was produced, would make a very good burner to heat coffee while the meal was cooking.

That explains why there was a greasy/waxy residue on the metal when it had all burned away.

The hexamine fuel tablets usually have a waxy coating on them so it's best to scratch the edge of the tablet on a knife or the stove frame to remove some of the wax and then light the tablet. I wish I had known about the hydrogen gas, our meal time would have been a blast! We swapped our Aussie rations packs for a few US MRE's.

Did not disappoint! That chicken dish looked REALLY good, and yeah MREs seem like a fun surprise bag for adults. MATCHES WOO! LOL Always a good time hanging with Clive in video form. (Probably best, otherwise I would have been vying for some of that chocolate if I was there, it looked great)

Now I have to go down in the basement, get the one we have had for five years, and try it.

Where I lived in Glasgow was well within the blast zone of the Trident nuclear base. I guess the government put it in Scotland so it didn't kill anyone important if it was bombed or malfunctioned.

Is the date a pack date? British rations certainly used to have that rather than a best before.

I lived near (within a couple of miles) a major supply depot for the British and NATO. I pretty much reckoned that if ever there was a strike. It would of been a target. As a young pup I worked at Harper Adams agricultural college as a groundsman and we saw it on fire when it happened the first time.

We had to watch "Burt the Turtle" as kids. Hide under your desk to survive a nuclear attack? More like the old joke, if you see the bright flash, remove all pens and pencils from your pocket, place your head between your legs and kiss your a** goodbye. Where I live was ground zero and targeted to reduce nearly the entire state to a layer of glass due to all of the military installations.

Thanks much for the BOOM! I like how the chocolate got darker when it was singed. The card said it was a "dry food ration". The foil bag was "shredded chicken with rice in" something. It looked good. It looked like camping food.

It can go off if it's left exposed to the air in a humid environment, as it absorbs moisture from the air over time and eventually ferments. Honey is naturally extremely dry, so it needs to be kept that way for an extended shelf life. You can also add water to it to accelerate this process, and this is how the alcoholic drink Mead is made, by speeding up the process of the honey "going off".
