Unposted video I stumbled across.

I made this slightly rough video while travelling.  I forgot about it because I had got back to my usual bench and ploughed straight into new stuff.

Should I release this?  Maybe keep it in reserve for if I get so engrossed in a project I fall behind with videos?

I have a similar (identical?) aluminum "wallet" but without the battery pack. I tried shielding my HID access card with it. It did *not* work. The card reader still reads the card. The only thing that worked and completely shielded my card was a nice silver-plated business card holder. That worked wonderfully.

I agree with Phil, my main interest with this would be to see if the case actually screens effectively against skimming devices and it would be very interesting to test it with a very basic reader just to see if it get can something of the card with it in the case. The battery charging functionality is of less interest to me, in fact would probably avoid a case with a lithium battery for the reasons you mention. So my vote would be to release as is then do a follow up to test the screening if you think that's a good idea 😊

I like it! It would be interesting to do a follow-up by building a "surreptitious card skimmer", find out how effective they are, and then see if these card protection cases actually work. Oh, but to answer your question, either release it or hang on to it till needed, it's up to you. It shouldn't go un-released, though.

Definitely release it. Saving it for a rainy day release is a good idea too.

Ya, My brand-new wallet. (leather) does have RFID blocking. it is a pain since I normally use to put my RFID hotel key in my Wallet an just turn around and put my back pocket near the lock and it use to work with my old wallet but not this one.

Ah, so I did post it to Patreon, but never released it for general viewing.

This does seem familiar

These style of wallets have an unfortunate habit of bursting and ejecting their contents when dropped (at least the ones my family have do). The aluminium case probably isn't responsible for RFID protection in this instance. I suspect it's probably in the walls of the card compartment. Also, while two NFC cards will 'clash' (as TfL like to call it), it's not a guarantee as sometimes one of the cards will work (though you can't predict which one).

Why does this feel familiar? I mean aside from Clive disassembling a power-bank...

Dustin

Yeah I agree, it has the added second review of a second spudger as well!

I live in NYC and had a NFC card for years without issue before the banks got rid of them for what I'm assuming was consumer concern. With the rise of NFC phone payments I'm guessing they don't want to loose that market, and it is back. The NYC subways are converting to tap cards that also accept both phone NFC and credit card tap payments. (The PATH which connects NJ and NY has had tap cards for years, but only their system issued cards) As many other things, there isn't zero possibility of a problem, but a problem not as likely as the modern paranoia state would have you believe. On the topic of credit card companies reimbursing you, many of these sorts of services from the credit companies are going away. Travel and car rental insurance used to be automatic, most cards no longer provide this. You may not even have noticed, since it was in some random "annual service agreement update" or similar that was ignored or discarded.

Wow, after years of watching I finally managed to find a nit to pick :) Payment cards actually implement a very sophisticated collision avoidance scheme, so their data does not get garbled. It is more likely that the terminal aborts the read if it sees multiple cards to avoid charging the wrong card.

I am watching this video, whist trying out "Dark and Stormy" for the first time. I was waiting for my wife and hour or so ago while she was in the doctors when I got an alert that you had uploaded this video- it was Stormy as f-f-fflipping anything which reminded me of the drink- so now after a quick pit stop at Tesco I am loving it- really warming feeling- Another winner from Big Clive!! haha! Great idea to shroud cards though.

I've had an NFC-enabled card for about five years now here in Australia and never bothered with any sort of special security, as our banks have said they will reimburse us for any unauthorised transactions. I've never run into any issues, except for sometimes when you want to use a PIN to avoid fees but as you go to insert your card the NFC reader picks it up and completes the transaction. At any rate, I figure it's in my benefit to have it, because if anyone *does* steal my card info, I can just say to the bank well you gave me a card that broadcasts my details, it's on you. But if I refuse any NFC-enabled card and my details get stolen, it's going to look like I was careless and I imagine it will be much harder to convince the bank that it wasn't my fault.

"Just before coming back to the Isle of Man from Glasgow I made a couple of videos, mainly to make my luggage look less bomb-like when I went through the airport. (They still went through it.)" :D

Andy Brown

You posted this to Patreon on 18th September 2018, just after midnight.

Andy Brown

The video has some year old comments so maybe you did release lt.

I liked the video, I don't mind if some of them are a bit rough. :) We're starting to get NFC-enabled credit cards in the US. My bank sent me one a couple months ago, but I don't carry it because of security concerns. My previous card without NFC still works, thankfully, so I've kept on using it.

Michael Dunn

I mean, You've already got it made and in the chute.. Why not save it for a rainy day when you are otherwise engrossed?
