Fixing a faulty PIR light that drains batteries.

I've come across this exact issue with low power battery operated items before.  A rogue component that suddenly decides it's going to draw current, and the normal standby current of a few tens of microamps suddenly becomes milliamps.

Can you guess which component failed?

Depending on the circuitry you can sometimes change a resistor or capacitor value to change the on-time. It's also possible to get ones that retrigger as long as there's movement. Others do a one shot or defeat the retrigger function by illuminating their own light sensor making the unit think it's too bright to need to turn on.

Excellent troubleshooting and fix. I have a couple of these in the closet for the Mrs. and I but I wish they stayed on longer than 15 sec. Like, maybe a minute? They seem to stop sensing movement while they are on.

This is what is in most desktop computers. And on most SBCs like Raspberry Pis. I don't know when the last time was I had a computer component in my hands (made in the last 5-10 years) that used TTH chips vs surface-mount ones.

My 1st thought was a capacitor- didn't realise it would be so tiny thou- I was expecting an electrolytic can, amazing learning curve for me, I am going to move up a tier- Subways for you from now on Clive! ;)

I've watched enough of your videos that I was thinking "The capacitor?", since those do seem to fail fairly often.

We had a cap case, we used for a drinking glass, how things have changed !

The amount of infomation I have gleaned from this video is unreal , the thermal imaging stuff is worth a video of its own and the tip with the component tester ( one of thy e best items on my bench ) and I’ve only watched the first five mins in Mc donolds car park , as a fully trained industrial spark who never cared for electronics mostly due to Clive I have a fully functioning electronics repairs setup in my garage and he’s still teaching me more

Caps are the butler... the butler did it.

Ahh, that rewarding feeling when you fix something by replacing a part that costs almost nothing.

You should go to sleep man and get some rest it is the middle of night :)
