The weirdest head torch yet.

I'm not going to recommend this head torch.  While it's commendable that it has a built in mains charger rated up to quarter of a thousand volts and a solar panel too, the device is rather bulky and heavy compared to many others.

If you don't mind having a big plastic brick on your forehead then it's certainly usable as a light.  The COB provides a wide but dim wash of light and the beam is bright, but just a little too tight for close work. The LED options are just off and on.  No dim mode for longer battery run time, other than the progressively dimmer operation as the battery discharges.

I'd guestimate the battery capacity at around 500mAh, but it's hard to say given the unusual choice of battery technology.

I still like SLA batteries. Lead-acid batteries are among the easiest to maintain as long as you know where they like to be kept happy.

I should watch the entire video before commenting ;)

As a regular user of SLA batteries... they have their uses. They're used in all sorts of slow-charge devices that have low-ish power output (Emergency lighting, for example). Also I am using them in a project in series. They're heavy, that's for sure, but they last a while and don't have the fire issue that LiPo does. They'll explode, but that's about it. This is why you don't see cars with LiPo vehicle batteries for starting and maintaining.

It does look like a camera. complete with flash.

Mike Hughes

Paint it silver. We need props for the next edition of "Johnny Spaceman"! Quickly there's no time!

Michael Thompson

It's current limited so will be capped by the battery voltage.

Big Clive

It does look a lot like a camera.

I'm trying not to step on electroboom's toes.

Big Clive

The capacitive dropper acts like a current limiter. So the voltage will be affected by the load. The capacitor value is usually between 100nF and 1uF.

Big Clive

That thing is U.G.L.Y. It ain't got no alibi...

Bridge Rectifier not been said right. please take note..

You didn't say

It's almost like they had some cheap camera housing and thought "What terrible thing could we do with this?"

Chris Plater

That was very interesting, however it raises a question for me- That had a 1uf capacitor that apparently gives 4 v after the FULL BRIDGE RECTIFIER (sorry - ElectroBoom will have to answer for that eventually! hahaha) How do you work out the voltage that you want , say to power x no of leds using a capacative dropper circuit? is there a formula or are you just going on experience when you design circuits requiring a cap dropper?

Mike Hughes

Not only Alarm systems. But very commonly in consumer UPS systems as well. These type of AGM (absorbed glass mat) Lead acid batteries only last 3 to 5 years and can go into thermal overrun.

Charles Bruckner

Would lead acid in cheap stuff be an attempt to side step shipping limitations on lithium cells?

It looks like someone's high school design project

The Tinkering Shed

what drops the voltage coming out of the rectifier down to 4 volts?

Ruthsarian

If you aren't going to eat the lead how are we ever going to know how it tastes?

Mark Trombley

I don't think you would want to move around much with that on your head. If it came loose, it could really bonk you in the face with how much it weighs.
