Never ending exploration.
Added 2020-02-04 23:40:04 +0000 UTCSince arriving in Glasgow just 24 hours ago, I've bought and taken apart three 10W lamps from ASDA, LIDL (Philips branded) and One Below (formerly Pound World). I've also taken apart a Philips ceiling light with PIR from Lidl and reverse engineered the driver and PIR sensor. Really annoyed at not having my usual lighting/printing setup to make videos with high detail images, so if I make videos about them here It'll have to be descriptive doodles.
Also regretting not having an illuminated magnifier for the tiny chip numbers.
All three of the lamps use large series arrays of chips in differing numbers of LEDs with linear current regulators. It seems to have become a standard now.
The ASDA one is grilling a small number of LEDs while the one with the biggest heatsinking area is actually the cheapest pound shop one. The Philips version has an interesting little twist designed to limit transient current through the regulator.

Take a photo with your mobile (assuming it's not steam powered!) then zoom into the image... usually works for me...

2020-02-05 07:02:13 +0000 UTCI prefer videos which are made with whatever is available at the location / time to make them. Seems more real to me. Some videos on other channels are just too slick and like watching a professionally produced TV programme. So doodle away...

2020-02-05 03:54:05 +0000 UTCClive, It's about time you put together a briefcase with all the necessary gear for proper tear-downs on the road. Just a small case with a camera mount, basic tools, emergency bottle of booze. Duplicate anything you absolutely must have to feed the voracious appetites of your viewers. (Don't forget to label it clearly as "NOT tools for terrorism!")

2020-02-05 01:51:39 +0000 UTCI can usually read chip numbers with my phone camera zoomed right in, without any extra lenses. On the other hand, I probably couldn’t manage to visit that many shops in a day, let alone do all the rest.
2020-02-05 00:40:52 +0000 UTCPhone magnifier is a good idea. But I really like this : https://www.hswalsh.com/product/triplet-loupe-10x-magnification-led-light-hp4310 . The only snag is that the tiny button cells don't last very long.
