Inside a Philips light from LIDL.

LIDL is a stack-'em-high low cost supermarket chain that uses short weekly bursts of gadget stock to keep people coming back.  Obviously I had to go and check out what they had while I was visiting Glasgow.

This light is very similar to the generic import units, but claims a 15 year LED lifespan and promises that you'll never have to change a lamp again.  It's true.  You'll have to change the whole fitting instead.

I picked that up, felt the weight of the glass and then put it back because I was travelling.

The most common issue for sudden dimming is a failed LED that tracks over internally until the circuit is such a high resistance that it barely glows. Usually manifesting as one or more LEDs with black dots in them where they burned.

I've a philips ES LED bulb here which has been used (outdoors) near continuously for less than a year. I changed it this month because, in about the last month or so it had become very dim. I've not yet opened it up to take a look, but am curious as to what might have gone wrong.

How fiendishly clever, using a bridge rectifier to allow a thyristor to switch both negative & positive mains cycles - I have never seen that before

Gordo

it does hav a resistor, a .001 ohm LOL

The Irish Lidl got in a different motion sensor ceiling light, their own brand Livarno Lux priced at €20. The light looks almost identical but without a visible PIR shown, so probably microwave based. Going by the specs on the box (I took a photo), its runtime is adjustable from 5s to 30m, adjustable range sensitivity up to 15m and includes a 10W LED rated at 806 lm. It says the max permitted bulb power is 20W, indicating it's replaceable.

A little heatsink compound between the boards and that metal case and the led chipsmight last as long as the supply

Well the transformer is Mauve.

So refreshing when companies tell a part-truth; even a half-truth is becoming rare these days. And never having to change a bulb may prevent "electrician's wrist"–a double benefit!

We had a LIDL move in less than a year ago 5 min. from my house. I stop in from to time to time to see what kind of stuff they have. I have purchased a variety of stuff from them. Decent prices and quality is usually ok. I got a string of color changing LEDs with a remote that the wife uses to provide accent light on some of her decorations.

that is a weird circuit

Yes indeed WELL worth taking to bits! It's funny how all the extra guarding looks like it is a little much

Unfortunately the same is true of the "looks nice, just don't look too close" fixtures in my new apartment. At least they have nice harvestable power supplies in them.
