Long rambly Q&A extra weird LED lamp build.

This lamp actually turned out great.  The camera doesn't catch it's full effect.

https://youtu.be/7-sSnZTu9SM

I've included search links for all the components in the description on YouTube.

I'll also be releasing another much shorter video tonight for those of you who aren't into the longer videos or want to save the long one for the weekend.

Long rambly Q&A extra weird LED lamp build.

You answered my question! <3 I'm partial to grey, myself.

EvilMadScientist is the only place I've been able to find diffused 5mm warm white (and they're a nice golden-y white) candle-flicker LEDs. Haven't been able to find them on EBay or anywhere else. Clear ones, yes - but not the diffused. https://shop.evilmadscientist.com/component/content/article/189 I'd love to find them somewhere in larger quantities and less expensive....

Heck, get a cheap windows tablet or the like that can be imaged and wiped easily to use for testing sketchy software.

This one skipped the queue because I wanted to give the shout out to Steve Summers gofundme for his workshop. There is still a gap of several videos between release to Patreon and on YouTube.

Big Clive

When I see Patreon videos hit YouTube I k new I need to get caught up

That was an enjoyable hour of just relaxing with a glass of vino plonko and learning without realising, and I get lots of inspiration to do things like this. I just wired a poundland neon cactus like yours to a 3v screwdriver charger(long defunct Nicad jobby) with a 47ohm resistor and after just 5 minutes my 13 yr old has claimed it! (I call that a result and attribute it to you!!)

re the Coronavirus, I have just ordered some stuff from China and been given an April to mid June delivery window, feeling sorry for those poor souls who have been told to work, regardless of the risks involved.

Clive why not put a VM on the laptop? Also generate 3MW from my roof based PV, and hot water is easily raised to 40C+ from a single flat Halliwell panel vertically mounted on south-facing wall which works even on overcast days.

Ian James

Thanks for this nice video and answering my question, Clive! Always happy when you posted a long video.

My Dad used to build RC model boats. On one of them he had a complicated little circuit to emulate a faulty flickering flourescent tube on the deck (the tube was lit by a tiny bulb hidden inside). He spent hours on that single detail. A cold white flickering LED would pretty much do the same trick.

Wim

It's quite a nice effect when they're used in bulk.

Big Clive

In this case you could just use the existing red capacitor for 110V.

Big Clive

That's can be quite complex to do. The size of the source and optical positioning are critical.

Big Clive

I've looked at various options. Ideally a rough single component fix, but it does require an H-bridge driver chip and an oscillator driving it.

Big Clive

You can always ask questions in the comments.

Big Clive

That means they're probably classed as "collectible" now.

Off topic here but a while back I was going to get another pixel purse for the panel as the cost was down to around $8, looked at Amazon yesterday and they were up to $51, yikes.

I enjoy watching you build anything when you explain the various components and effects of alternate values, in particular things like capacitors and why they are there. I also get ideas to make stuff based on what components I have. Have lately been spending some time working with programming various MCU, mostly avr (M8,M16,M328, some Tinys, ect). Plan is to make something using a bunch of LEDs I have and control it by MCU.

I just pulled a handful of connector-ed wires from the scrap bin at work, like a dozen of them. Time to build I guess!

Michael Thompson

Love the “Crap” projects! Very informative and inspirational. Appreciate your answer to all the questions too! Hope your feeling better soon big guy.

Great vid Clive. I'm all for keeping them long mate

Mike Wynne

I offer a thumbs UP. Very relaxing video, and you made something nice from a low quality kit. Cheers

Chuck Kirchner

https://youtu.be/wBe9_UnyADI here's something I made earlier.

Neil Tonks

I got a few of those bulbs for soldering practice. I've been doing the same with the LEDs to ensure they're properly seated. I need to go back and see what resistor you recommended changing for 110v power.

Roland Roberts

Thanks for answering my question! Cool lamp! The flickering LEDs didn't really show until the lights were out. Then it looked much better

Nani Isobel

I really enjoyed this one. I am inspired to build something now. I have been thinking of taking one of my old filmstrip projectors and replacing the lamp with either a COB or Luxeon LED while keeping the existing optics. Really, just to see if I can do it and to have something to tinker with.

Chris Hegwood

I like these, they are fun to watch.

Mark Trombley

Thinking of LEDs any ideas for a simple circuit to drive a 2 wire string of xmas lights, permanently on (i.e. no flicker/effects), the ones that need a reversing polarity supply.

Mr B Shepherd

More long project videos please. These are the best.

Bas

Love this types of videos jus wish I could have posed a some questions of my own,

Charles Bruckner

"The peenie flap" And I just choked on my tea. Keep it up (as it were)

Steven Raith

Bugger! Watched the other one. Found the pebble video. Didn't see this one. Gives me something to watch at work now.

Neil Tonks

Out of curiosity, does people not finishing videos hurt your YouTube “rating”... I started watching in early 2019 I think and so to find your earlier videos I often click through your videos on the sidebar until YouTube recommends a video I havnt seen yet, as it’s easier than using the filters, is that bad?

Michael Gilchrest

People who want the short video: Turn in your fan-card!!!! (jk)

Michael Gilchrest

Yay, home sick, new build video exactly what I need!!!
