Connector crimping tool test.

I really screwed this video up with a rookie mistake.  I'm used to using the crimping tools that do both contact and insulation crimps at once, so when I was using the single jaw version I thought that the insulation would need a bigger jaw position.  It doesn't.  You use the same jaw for both.

After the video I made off several more crimps of each type with the cheap iWiss crimper using just the 1.6mm position and they were all perfect.

I can hardly believe how cheaply sets of pre-terminated connectors are on eBay. They're ideal for many projects, but it's useful to be able to make custom wiring looms.

Being that I see the reels or KNOW the wire is at rapid or equivalent. What’s the markup on buying those pigtails or 28/10 ribbon cable? It’s just easier for me that way. As always clive, your manner of presentation should be taught to these kids. While you don’t do a script you’re still able to put together some fun vids, and then add in the livestreams ☺️☺️

I love crimpers and pin extractors and don't hesitate to grow my collection when I can.

We use HE14 which are dual wipe and a bit more compact than Molex. Quite impressed with dual row JST as you can get 8 ways in the footprint of a 4 way HE14. But predictably, crimping is the cloud to that silver lining. I've a colleague who swears by 1mm FFC. They have their place I suppose. I don't like the way they flap about - only 50V insulation which is no good next to a mains conductor carrying 4kV spikes. I can put silicone insulated wire in an HE14 if I want.

I got an SN28B from Amazon for $15. Like you said, it took a bit of getting the feel for it, but not using it constantly, it works well enough for some RPi projects.

Just found (& bought!) the IWS-2820M for £10.35 inc. shipping from Ali Express. I also found and bought the FSA-0626 strippers for £5.63 also on Ali Express. I love the honesty in your videos. Brilliant!

I bought that same iwiss when I subscribed here a couple years ago. I must have wasted dozens of leads because I didn't know about the ratchet release lever till now. I should have rtfm. Actually I'm sure I read it and forgot it. Has anyone ever used a tool for years and then found out it did more than you thought?

Jim

I think it adjusts the crimping force before the ratchet releases.

Many decades ago I was sent to the AMP, now Tyco factory to learn how to provide certified crimps. The professional tools cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. That being said, I use a cheap crimper for making crimps and with carefull use, you can provide very acceptable crimp for most brands of terminals. I have done literally thousands of crimps using a manual tool. The "Dupont" crimps need a particular tool and are very finicky. Very informative video.

Showing my ignorance here but many of these crimp tools have a little toothed adjuster on them. For the life of me i have never worked out what it's purpose is! Anyone know and how to determine what "setting" it should be on?

I have a SN-28B and (after some extreme fiddeling :)) it works. I bought it with all the different "bits". There where 2 problems in my "trying fase". At first: how to put the stuff in? The second was: at wich side you put it in. There was a last, minor, problem: how long do you cut the cable? As said, some fiddeling was nessasary, but it works in the end. I don't like to crimp in two phases. A little edit: I tested the crimp tool with the same connector and with different types of cable. In short: all the shitty cable from China did'nt fit as good as the same sized of Rapid.

I looked at the multi-head tools, but they didn't seem to have the proper heads for folding the wings round on these small terminals.

Update: about $22.00 was the cheapest (with tax), and free shipping. Prices ranged from this one up to $45.00 plus shipping. Definately sort on price plus shipping lowest to highest. I also did not get strippers with it. I don't need them, anyway.

That's precisely what I like about your videos. You tell it, demonstrate it, and if you f#$k it up, you genuinely feel bad. Keep it up, dammit!! I'm off to buy a IWS2820, now. Thanks

Chuck Kirchner

I got an SN-2 tool with my first set of these type of connectors, the tolerances don't seem as bad and I've done quite a few crimps successfully. I haven't done these tests though. My favourite crimping tool so far is the ferrule crimper, fantastic.

Matt Tester

I've just had to buy an MQS crimper and die. Knipex seem to be the only people who make them for this terminal. Niche tool, niche cost of nearly £250.

evilution

I'm glad I'm not the only one who struggles sometimes with crimping these tiny connectors. They're a massive PITA

Simon Howroyd

Looks good. I've been using a Waldom HT-1921 for the Molex connector pins for decades. It is a two step process but I have always done field service and installation not line production.
