I'm trying LBRY.

For better or worse I'm giving LBRY a go on the recommendation of other electronic YouTubers.   At the very least it's a way to have an automatic backup of most of my existing videos in an easy way.  (They offer a sync to your existing YouTube channel.)  This also theoretically means I don't have to upload the same video to multiple sites, which would not be fun with existing upload speeds.

Nothing will change in the way I publish to YouTube and release videos here first.  It's really just a precaution against the possibility of a system problem causing loss of existing content, or politics resulting in me being banned for saying naughty things.

I may also publish projects and teardowns of a slightly shadier variety directly to LBRY before it gets big enough for the militant complainers to start trying to get it shut down.

I've been monitoring all the other options and although I think YouTube is going to be around forever, and probably the best choice for general use, I'm just keeping our options open.

Let me know what you think.

I'm still looking into that. It seems like only a /index/ of the available content is shared to all users via a blockchain-like system, but the actual content hosting is probably done on dedicated servers. It's not a bad idea because it means you can't stop anyone from adding their content to this index, but it also is a bit worrying because what if someone starts spamming broken content indices...

There are 3 buttons, the 1st is download, second is view in browser- the download is a massive file. I'm going to just use my browser for now.

Looked up that LBRY thing and see it's a peer-to-peer network. Thus technically the viewer also is the content publisher. Do I want to be the server/publisher of BigClive videos? - Yes. And other LBRY content that I don't like? Not sure about that.

Honestly Big Clive, I'd follow you wherever you went. It makes complete sense (Given what people like Louis Rossman have recently had happen to them) to diversify and protect your intellectual property rights.

Lucas Illingworth

Hey buddy, patreon works so well because a lot of people donate small amounts, which all add up

Lucas Illingworth

It is a bit weird. I will still be using YouTube as my main platform.

Big Clive

LBRY is still young, hopefully it'll get better with time. Vimeo used to be very glitchy in its early days.

Big Clive

Impossible to watch on my crappy internet connection (1.5Mbs, actual ~.85). Youtube plays fine on computer and FireStick. *SIGH*

If it makes sense for you then go for it. I'm staying away from LBRY though. Looks way to alt-right/crypto/Flat Earth-bro for me, so I hope you keep uploading to the tube

Karl Åström

Never heard of this, thanks for that inspiration!

Jörg Schötz

Just had a looksee and can't find any content yet- did you already upload something? if so give us a clue pls.

Mike Hughes

Every single dollar is appreciated. I know that some of you are experiencing rocky times.

Big Clive

It can be viewed on a browser.

Big Clive

YouTube's "trending" page is demoralising. It's mainly stage-managed channels involving extreme but obviously fake "challenges".

Big Clive

Clive, i think it's a great idea with a back up solution in case someone at YouTube decides that you are too creative.

I'm aware I'm providing almost no revenue to you with my ridiculous patreon subscription (I have to distribute my limited budget), but I'm so sick of YouTube stupid rules, that I'm starting to watch as many videos as possible on LIBRY, as a punishment to the big G, I'm also aware I'm only one in a huge crowd, but I'm sure I'm not the only one...

elias

IMHO: WTF is LBRY, I did not RTFM. Just a NOOB, seriously.

Hub Rijcks

It looks like I have to download an app to view on LBRY. If that is true, not that happy with that. BC - happy to upload your vids as I have a fast and unlimited internet connection (Virgin Media - M350).

I've followed you on LBRY. Always good to have an alternative given the unpredictability of YT...

Peertube is another attempt to have a more difficult-to-censor platform for sharing/distributing content outside of the 3 corporate silos.

Yrjänä Rankka

Yeah it’s a cesspool but so is Youtube. Numerous examples of Youtube dropping channels like a bag of sick for ... Murrica - type of reasons so good to have a backup.

Yrjänä Rankka

Seems like a good idea,, keeping viable options open "just in case" - after all it is kind of your livelihood, and if the merde hits the fan, you are already to jump ship.

Mike Hughes

My god there's some trash on the default page of LBRY. That said, I haven't seen the default YouTube page for about 2 years.

Adam Baxter

Clive. DO it. YOUR stuff is way to valuable to lose ! We, as your Patreons, know that you will Never get rich on this " Labour of Love" and that's why we are supporting you. Once you made your First YouTube million, we shall think again ! .

Good idea

What's that for?

Big Clive

It seems a bit complex. I'm not even 100% sure how it all works myself. I'd say it might be a very "independent" platform for geeks.

Big Clive

We'll keep watching on YouTube since that generates revenue for you but it is handy to have a (hopefully) reliable backup. It is also safer if you post things there that could be genuinely dangerous in the hands of those new to fiddling about with the sparky stuff.

Bill Kerr

it worked on my ipad..

As long as you post links here we will find you 🍻

Wonderful news! I despise YT's frequent, drastic revisions of their algorithms (keeping presenters from relying on a stable income stream and ensuring they won't make the kind of profit YouBoob makes). And don't let me forget to mention their arbitrary and cavalier application of their bans!

Seems very sensible to me.

John Russell

What?!? No iOS support???? Nooooooo

Lostngone

(in download directory at shell prompt:) youtube-dl -c -w -i -v "https://www.youtube.com/user/bigclivedotcom/videos"

Eric Stuyvesant

Cool! I didn't know about this until now. Going to give this a go.

Brooks Andersen

yeah, with the fuckery going on on YouTube these days I'm actively subscribing to my YT subs on LBRY when they appear and preferentially watching the videos there. My only gripe with LBRY so far is not being able to suppress reposts from my main "following" feed, kinda irritating when several of the people you follow repost stuff from other creators you follow...

Jrandom Bob

He should be able to post a link. LBRY normally runs on the desktop, but also has a new (new to me) web version: https://lbry.tv

I just subscribed to @bigclivedotcom over at LBRY

Awesome, glad to see more of my subscribers joining LBRY. In case you aren't familiar with it, LBRY is a video sharing platform that uses the blockchain to provide more power to users, more reliability and stop censorship: https://lbry.com

Yes, good idea. Just need the link to subscribe :)

Rob O'Donnell

I think this is a good idea, especially if it helps you protect your content.

to watch the shadier libr vids we need to b eon there are will you post a link here?

Michael Gilchrest

Works for me. BACKUPBACKUPBACKUP!!!

Chuck Kirchner

Great! But what is LBRY?? Edit - Looked up up. Still not sure but now know enough to not care.
