A large part of the problem is the software being written by inexperienced people using module libraries of unknown security. Even the high profile products like Nest will inevitably have weaknesses.

That is why I don't have any IoT device at home. But the manufacturer could argue that it is "a feature", not a bug. As it ensures to get you into actual full chastity "for ever".
