Hacking Poundland stuff

It's ages since I've stripped apart and modified something from Poundland.

This is probably the fastest and cheapest way to get COB LED arrays.

@Cerity can't remember off the top of my head. I actually meant to take a look at it again today but as always work got in the way. I'll defo check tomorrow

What was the current/ apparent power draw❓

Cerity

A very useful hack in case of power outage and for just 2 quid is well worth it. It's on my shopping list for my next jaunt into Poundland.

Mike Hughes

Ah ha correction. My workmate says we ran it off batteries and it melted. We then put the ams1117 and used USB supply with current meter in line to see what it was drawing. we used that for a bit but the housing continued to melt so then cob went on the heat sync where it remains.

Now that it's on the heat sync I run it at around 4v from DC supply that seems pretty optimal brightness and not overly toasty

I was using it to light up my desk while I was working on something and I could smell the ever familiar scent of plastic melting. And the whole housing was squishy on the back. Cob really just got super hot and melted the housing. Now it should be said that I powered it using ams1117 3v3 so that I could run it from usb. But it should be adequate for replacing two 1.5v cells. Apparently not quite

The very same

The same one I showed?

I've never seen the fraction type before.

It's just to stop people complaining about how they couldn't see through the magnifying glass when I was using it. A macro lens for a quite cut might not be a bad idea, with the advantage of being easier for me to see too. You guys get to see what's on my bench in higher resolution than I do.

Big Clive

I recently bought one of the round ones there and she melted the ass out of the housing. I took the cob out and mounted on a heat sync with some thermal paste. It's my little desk lamp / heater now. It does get mighty toasty.

I have a vernier calliper that has a nice feature of displaying fractions of an inch, https://www.banggood.com/150mm-Stainless-Steel-LCD-Display-Digital-Caliper-6-Inch-Fraction-MM-Inch-High-Precision-Stainless-Steel-LC-p-1373616.html I bought a second for a friend and it was intermittent because the contacts were just able to work as a friction fit and had not been soldered, but it would turn off when you used it. https://photos.app.goo.gl/42n3T8qpHYySC9i17 I did not strip it down further I just soldered it as it was and managed a successful repair. Just not worth complaining to Banggood. There was a lot of grit that needed to be cleaned out to make it smoother to operate.

I would recommend getting a macro lens for your phone and using that instead of the magnifying glass that we can't read.

I have a slightly different design of WORKLIGHT STYLE and the base is a bit smaller meaning when batteries are installed it will not stand up on a flat surface easily. At the same time I bought another light that has an unusual lens, instead of the usual collimating lens it has a hole, it works quite well outside see link below. https://photos.app.goo.gl/KnUvrvwt2Bbrca7B9 I might post a picture of my 1980s diving lamp that had a sealed beam that was designed to cope with water detracting the light beam, heck on dry land it was immense, pity my cousin put too much voltage on it an blew the lamp, wish I could get a spare. Purchased in buyology.co.uk/our-stores in Barry Wales

Goes and grabs a libation...

“It puts out a fair pack of li... light” I felt you wanted to say “pack of lies” for a sec 😅 I guess Poundland do bend the truth occasionally, namely with their pricing ... Fivepound Land....

This will be fun
