Here's the wiring loom/harness video

I have to admit that I really enjoyed exploring this wiring system.  It taught me a lot about the electrical system used in things like quads and scooters.

I'm not finished though.  I'm going to try and de-pot some of the resin encapsulated components.

Well the Pan 1300 and Golding fo have electric windows.

Gold Wing. I believe the Space Shuttle is simpler :)

Phil Collins

That's just becoming a full-on car.

Big Clive

Now you have served your apprenticeship on the scooter loom. Try a loom from a big bike like a pan 1300. 4 cylinder fuel inkection.

this is the electric circuit of Peugeot scooters 50cc it's also the same for the Peugeot 103 mopped but without the regulator because the 103 don't have battery so it not need it but can be added (i did that in the past to make a really bad electric generator with a efficiency of about 3% XD) if you want to look at the diagram you have to don't forget i've not touch a scooter for more than 20 year and new generation are different so, something like the Peugeot Speedfight will be the same as what you bought for £20 (i'm French obviously) http://www.scootcustom.com/upload/photos/33386-titre-de-l-article-large.jpg

The extra kill switch connector could go to a wrist mounted lanyard, so if the rider falls off it kills the engine. Those are pretty standard connections at least on the old Japan products but obviously a different quality standard

Somewhere I still have the CDI I built for my Triumph Herald in 1970, from a Electronics Today International design I think. Had problems with the modern caps packing up despite being rated for 400V or 600V. In the end I recovered one of those old rectangular metal box caps from an old valve (tube) radio which although only rated for 300V lasted until the car sold . Unexpected interesting teardown - thanks Clive.

"cheap chinese crotch rocket" ....there goes the coffee up the wall again! 🛵

Interesting exploration and yeah that's' what you get for very little money: very little Maybe a lot of hardware, but ultimately how useful will it be and for how long?

These kind of connectors are completely standard for an 80s/90s Land Rover, they didn't bother with waterproof and it's one reason why they have so many electrical gremlins. Looks like an ideal cheap loom for a Colin Furze creation.

Matt Tester

Big Clive, I see you in full biker gang leather but riding a Vespa.

Lostngone

Clive never disappoints with such a variety of videos to suit all tastes. I just wish all the previous videos were easier to search through as there are many that I wish to watch again.

John Russell

No wonder they corrode so quickly.

Usually you can on bikes, but there are slots on the stator not holes if you can, and as far as i can see theres only round holes on this one (wich also makes sense because 99.9% of the time you dont actually need to modify the timing so its easier to service since you cant fuck up the timing)

New lorries they would full replace the wire harness . This was around mid 1980s a buddy I knew did this for years making a full harness from scratch, the reason was the customer had bad experience with wiring faults / failures. Many of the vehicles were used in quarries and would often be hot power washed. I guess cheep wagons with poor quality standards. He would do things like this, Full earth return wire for everything, NO chassis returns aloud. Extra cable on moving parts to reduce fatigue Every part of the cable harness strapped down Last thing you need is a cement mixer lorry to be stranded at the roadside.

Honda XL250 in the 1980s had a black and white wire (ITR) with a connector that you could easily separate and start the engine without a key. Thanks Clive I now understand why my kill switches use to fail by tracking because of dirt arcing out, back then I did not think it was HIGH voltage. the contacts on most kill switches were mounted on (Phenolic cotton cloth laminate) or something like that. I would scratch the burn tracks and coat them with silicone sealant. Tip Never use a kill switch keep it for when it is needed. TIP grease does not work to stop HT spark plug arcing it conducts (found out the hard way when it started to rain). They used to sell a spray varnish to spray the plug and HT lead. TIP2 find HT electrical problems in a dark garage and a water spray bottle, you will either see the sparks or the engine will stop. With off road bike you can get to things a bit easier. I used to have a yellow SWM320 there were very few wires on that since there were no lights, old style press bulb horn... 6 gears and you could set off in top gear. The Rotax engine was interesting it had a rotary valve for the carburettor intake to the crank case to increase the piston inlet pressure, this gave the trial bike more bottom end torque. Not the best bike for long road journeys ;-)) Wires kill switch, ignition coil wire, HT lead - yep it was ROAD LEGAL but not at night I have a BSA 125 bantam 2 stoke as a box of bits. One day I will rebuild it and hope to replace some missing bits one shock absorber, centre stand and side stand (will make them if I have to)

copy from my YT comment: So unlike the CDI on a car it doesn't need the battery to make spark. I guess it makes better and more controllable spark than the old points, condenser, and magneto but doesn't need any battery like the old ones. Very nice And I embarrassingly didn't think it would be a cool vid, sorry Mr. Big !!

Aaron Nadler

That's dirt cheap for a wiring loom. We paid over £600 for replacement in son's Mini.

Andrew Donaldson

A lot of bikes have a kickstand kill switch, probably doesn't apply here (quad). I ran afoul of an intermittent kick switch with my first bike not starting sometimes.

Wim

I think could be wrong but the magneto stator the plate with the two coils on is not fix i think can be rotated for would and back would to advance and retard the spark .

Mort

I shall watch it at lunch! :)
