There's a theory that gold plated boards do not provide as good a solder bond as tinned ones. I found I had to buff the gold surface with a bit of kitchen towel before soldering for best results due to an oxide layer forming on the not-quite-pure-gold.

I should wash but am lazy ;) I've a build coming up so have a decision to make. It's either traditional flux followed by IPA wash or new style followed by ... ? IPA then deionized water? Again my decision to use flux + fine solder rather than paste is mostly laziness. I've too many experiences of bridging, balling and dry joints. I'll use paste on the processor, probably. The boards are gold flash, which in my experience likes a bit of flux. Maybe that's down to new crappy lead free solder.

This is just a random set of five knock-off fluxes I added to an order. I try and wash off excess wet flux after use. But I usually leave the hard flux from solder core intact.

I've slightly gone off this type of flux. It's a bit leaky - by which I mean tens of megohms across DMM prods. When you've got a capacitive touchpad that operates around the 1G mark, that's a problem. I never suspected the flux! The other stuff is sticky A.F. Horses for courses I guess.

It does go active, but clears regularly. It sometimes gets used as a casual chat room.
