Inside the CDI module (more sand!)

Here's the CDI (Capacitive Discharge Ignition) module from the quad/scooter loom.

https://youtu.be/R1wrrsb3RDk

Its purpose is to charge a capacitor from the high voltage winding on the alternator/magneto, and then dump that charge through the primary of the ignition/spark coil to create a high voltage spark at the tip of the spark plug when the engine flywheel triggers a sensor.

Shorting the plug wire to kill the engine is pretty much commonplace in small engines.

That analogy of turbulent water filling a tank and providing a smooth flow of water out, is the best description of a smoothing capacitor ever, I had never thought of it that way before.

Mike Hughes

Lol. Well he could get tossed overboard from a rough sea 😂🎂

Cerity

Maybe also to allow for thermal expansion and contraction.

CCM 500cc single motocross bike ignition noise sounded like a 1980s camera flash, hi pitched whine. Made in Bolton UK, it may be a surprise they even exported to the USA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clews_Competition_Motorcycles

The China sand is a plot to claim land in other countries ;-)

Clive lives on the Isle of Man. It's like 14 feet across ... where could he go???!!?

Peter Laws

We deal with similar ones where I work. Potted in clear epoxy with small river rock. My understanding is that the rock/sand pulverizes, absorbing the shock of violent failures.

Michael Thompson

I missed the stream as well - just didn't see the email for some reason. It was there, just blind for some reason.

John Carr

I've worked on multiple smallish (a few kW) gasoline generators with CDI ignition that use the same design of shorting the magneto winding to ground when the ignition switch is switched off, so I think it's probably a common design. I've also seen some good quality ~5kVA transformers that appear to have sand under clear potting epoxy, but those are meant for dry areas and have a solid epoxy layer providing sealing. I don't really know why they have sand in them though.

John Hiesey

Stop it. Stop saying long trips. There will be no long trips taken with this thing unless the inevitable explosion throws you off a cliff.

Michael Thompson

I've not checked that yet.

Big Clive

I was wondering if it was a frequency related timing thing.

Big Clive

Mainly an understanding of how it all works. The modules will probably work OK, but spares would be a good idea on a long trip.

Big Clive

There'll be the HVAC Overtime stream today and the usual Saturday stream.

Big Clive

Is the wire itself at least made of copper?

Scott Miller

Is that odd RC network associated with spark advance/retard perhaps?

Dave Davies

Any worthwhile components to scavenge from the loom❓

Cerity

I’m also mad I missed the live stream today! I remembered about an hour before it started but then work got in the way and it slipped my mind.

Lostngone

I hope you’re saving all this sand for your Zen rock garden! 😂
