Yeah, sorry. Another ioniser video

The unique feature of this one is that it has a green LED power indicator.  That might sound a bit of an anticlimax, but back when this unit was made about 40 years ago, a common 5mm green LED was actually something special.  It was used to convey an element of sophistication in the same way blue LEDs are routinely abused now.

The ioniser was sold to help pacify people who wore synthetic fabric clothes, sat on sweaty plastic seats on nylon carpet while using hot flickery video terminals that made strong plastic and PCB type smells.  Basically just electrostatic hell, with this device doing its best to nudge the polarity in the right direction at your desk.

If you're a channel regular then this video won't have a lot of new info unless you love ionisers.  I do have to repeat a lot of stuff in ioniser videos, because for some people it will be their first look at the inside of an ioniser, so it has to tell the full story.

Yeah, sorry. Another ioniser video

l am waiting to see what Amazon have to say as l didnt like the makers reply which is why l sent it to you , as l had listened to your video earlier in the year and as l had one in the 80s that did a good job without causing me problems which is why l asked the makers about ozone .....l trusted the makers statement about ozone output based on the info gleaned from you as l trust your integrity as you have nothing to gain unlike the makers of equipment you teardown or explain the workings of such gear ....l noticed later that a similar complaint was made by another buyer who mentioned you in his review if you have time look at this page and scroll down to the customer reviews the first one mentions you and the reviewer suffered the same symptoms as l had,,,,l wish l would had read this before l bought mine... its taught me to read ALL the customer and peer reviews ....Thanx for your time taken on this and l hope other BC family members find it useful l looked at the metal spikes in a dark room and YES they are glowing blue/purplish all the time https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00L3OZX2C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Well that's a load of crap. If your unit is the type that has metal spikes behind a metal plate with holes in it, then it's more of an ozone generator, as most of the ions emitted from the metal points will be attracted straight to the oppositely charged plate. If you look in the front of the unit and can clearly see purple corona discharge on the tips of the metal spikes in low light levels, then it's producing a significant amount of ozone. It might well drop to 0.05 PPM if there was a fan moving it around in a VERY big room, but in an average room it might produce enough to cause a hoarse throat. The unit is not likely to be "finding the room highly polluted" because it has nothing to measure that. It's hard finding a traditional ioniser these days, but you could make one with a common Chinese ioniser module. Maybe I should buy your ozone generator off you and do some tests on it.

Big Clive

what the manufacturer said today The PM 100 produces around 0.04 - 0.05 ppm (Parts per Million) of ozone as part of the ionization process, and produces Millions of Negative ions per CC. This minute quantity of ozone is well within the EPA, WHO, FDA and OSHA standard. For reference, ozone amount measured in forest air is in the range of 0.01 to 0.02 ppm and under no study it shows that forest air is bad for your health. Please be advised the ionisation process will be initially higher due to the item finding the area highly polluted. Once the item has cleaned the air, the unit will not have to work as hard. It is recommended to use the item for 2/3 weeks to clean the air. Please also ensure the room is well ventilated.....

John Catterall

Thanx Clive , looks like Amazon are concerned enough to offer me help should the manufactorer fail to help....in passing what make of Ioniser which wont break the bank can you reccomend , l will use the timer on the one l have ...thanx for your reply ..

John Catterall

If you're in a country with a 220-240V supply then you could build one without a PCB in a plastic pipe.

Big Clive

A quick fix could be to put it on a digital timeswitch so it only comes on for a few minutes several times during the day. It's not really an ioniser though.

Big Clive

That's an ozone generator. I've got no problem with ozone at naturally occurring levels, but of you can smell it strongly in the vicinity of the unit, or it's in a small room then it's not ideal.

Big Clive

Thanx Cerity , l have contacted the manufactorer they are in B/ham...l did ask originally when l bought it if it emitted ozone and was told no , l ask them that based on one of Clives videos where he mentioned ozone etc......l bought it as a form of " air purifier / refresher " as l have been on lockdown since march and thought that it would " help" disinfect the air in the house....as it was only 25 quid l thought if it helps then its better than nothing and using other protective measures combined would be good....

John Catterall

Yeah the bleachy smell is ozone. ☣️Definitely not a good idea to inhale it for long periods, most manuals say to vacate the area being treated ☢️during the treatment and a little time after for the volatile ozone to recombine/oxidize ⭕️... it’s working at all that but really needs to be used in conjunction with HVAC filter/ ducting to process all the air/ contaminants effectively🎊

Cerity

l bought a ioniser in March at the start of lockdown ,l used it a few times but it smells slightly of bleach and l have found it gives me headaches whenever l use it .....l have now turned it off and contacted Puremate , l had an ioniser back in the 80s and it never affected me but l am sure this one is emitting ozone .......or at least something that gives me problems . the model l have is the PureMate PM 100 Silent Ionic Air Purifier and Ioniser Protecting Against Airborne, Allergens, dust Pollen, Asthma Allergies, Dust, Mold, Pets, Smokers, Cooking, Air Cleaner, Eliminates all Germs, 4 Watts

:-(

It would require about double the stages to get the required voltage.

Big Clive

Yeah I did not quite get why? Kan one not 'just' have an extra stage on the multiplier ? Also. some of us are on the european grid ;-)

I love ionisers! You can hardly make enough videos about them for me. I got me a bag of X1 capacitors to build one, but I don't know what to house it in and I don't want to mess around with mains without isolation. In any case, whoever doesn't want to watch videos on ionisers, doesn't have to.

horrovac

I worked for a bloke who lived in Bickerstaffe, down the road from Skem. He made probably one of the first voice controller units for disabled people (went on the Granada TV programme Flying Start and got roasted...unfairly). As soon as I seen this I thought this might have been him....not though

Orb505

That's more "functional" than naughty.

Big Clive

I've considered that, but the voltage difference is an issue. The standard design is best suited to 220-250V use.

Big Clive

Clive. Would you consider designing a PCB so that we can make our own 'Big Clive approved Ioniser" ?

I enjoyed the ironiser video. I made a very naughty ironiser. It used 25 diodes and 47nF caps glued "dead bug" style on a piece of plastic. I used insulin needles soldered to one track of Vero board.

Nuts 'n' Proud

I love a good teardown. Always something new to discuss or reflect upon. Noting the capacitive dropper is awesome because yeah that is early for something like that and wonderfully simple for the task. That shrink wrap always makes me feel like I'm about to destroy something... oh wait I'm probably just conditioned from past adventures! LOL

Michael Thompson

A geen or amber LED is indeed way nicer than the in-you-face-screaming blue ones.

Frank

I am sorry to say that I enjoyed this video, again :) Good story also.

Frank

Ozone requires more exposure to the coronal discharge, and more airflow👍 a fan can increase the effective range of the ion cannon

Cerity

The voltage doubler essentially ‘dumps’ the charge every half wave, while jumping to the next stage, higher ratings lead to lower failure rates (i think) To get higher coronal output, you need more exposure, look up the three ‘tab’ of aluminum foil ends🦾 separated by glass

Cerity

That would be fun to watch. Clive did a video at least once with the pyramid👌👍

Cerity

This is an interesting Linkedin profile it seems this guy is still involved in air purifiers and was marketing director at Mountain Breeze back in the day. https://www.linkedin.com/in/richard-hobbs-19525611 It seems the company also had links with the Maharishi Transcendental Meditation Community religion (cult?) https://www.goldendome.org.uk/about

Mike Hanley

I bought a Mountain Breeze Ion Prism 2 years ago off eBay as a result of watching one of Clive's ioniser videos. It was new in that it had never been opened but the packaging had faded due to its age (80s onwards I guess). The light on it lasted a year before going out. Not found how to take it apart to try and repair it. I think the case halves are melted together at four points so will need to be drilled out.

John Russell

I could watch a weekly ionizer video from you :P

Erik Granlund

We had one of the Toblerone shaped ones in the late 80s/early90s. They seem to do a good job of knocking dust out of the air. I might have a dabble and build one. My healthy respect for high voltage may win out though......

Paul Noble

Meh. Teardowns are fun. Especially vintage-y ones where you can see everything.

Brendan Meteer

No need to apologise- these are fascinating devices, and since I first started watching your channel, I have built quite a few different ones and believe they really do have a positive effect on mental well being.

Mike Hughes

Back in the days when people smoked in Shops and Restaurants, one of your reps suffered a heat attack and he started selling these. I did buy one for the shop I ran and if we left it on all night and made sure I washed and cleaned out the ashtrays it did clean the air by the time I came back in the morning. The rep said it helped him get better from his heart attack but he did die six months latter from another heart attack. When the shop closed I took mine home and did use it for many years.

Jeremy Travis

A couple of questions; Why do the caps have to be rated for 630V and not the usual 400V? What is the voltage that starts the minimum ionization process? 4KV? What's the needle made of? Can't be stainless steel because it's soldered to a copper bar. Lastly, how much electric field is safe to be around? I turned on one of these EM radiation meters, and it went nuts around a florescent light! I can just imagine how it will act around this ionizer!

MarkM

So what would happen if you were to plug a whole bunch of them in, in a small room? Would you just end up with a room full of ozone or something else?

Lostngone

The stuff you do is why I'm here man.

Michael Thompson

Never be sorry about releasing a video Clive! It's why we're here. I'll finally be off this Saturday hope you do a stream, I hope I get to watch SpaceX Crew 1 as well. Do you watch the launches much? Cheers

These days I'd suggest one of the potted modules from eBay with direct mains power. I don't recommend the low voltage ones as they can create a high voltage differential across standard plug-in power supplies.

Big Clive

OK, so, woo aside, ioni(s|z)ers do have some air-cleaning effect ... what would one look for if one were to buy one and what would one avoid?

Peter Laws

mmm ionizers in the morning

Michael Gilchrest

all for the whoofler🦾🎊

Cerity

Any video is welcome. I`ve been watching a Creality stream for the past 14 hours. Watching 5 3d printers in mostly silence for this long was a bad idea. The things I do to try and win a printer ! But hey, if I win one, it will double my foamy whoofler and led cap productivity.

If only we could return to subtle green LEDs instead of blinding blue. I've actually done some swaps to red in some devices, and added resistors in some others.

Jason Brinkerhoff

Clive on ASMR, you know people pay for that stuff right CB 🦾✌️👌😁
