Inside a cheap, simple and hackable lithium charger

A deliberately simple video, mainly because I've been losing a lot of sleep recently.  Largely due to my brother Ralfy not understanding my nocturnal lifestyle.  (A lot of technical people seem to work at night.)

https://youtu.be/stg9RkuZVPw

A worthy charger though.  It uses the very common charge circuitry found in many rechargeable products.

Hahaha, that picture is realy Chinesee.....

Since you mentioned the head dissipation it would be interesting to see thermal images of circuits like this under load.

Matt Tester

Do you have a link to those 20AH "Firebomb" cells? Also, surely you meant HouseFyre ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nZQRt4BXr8

Nice touch 👍

I added that bit. It's a play on the shadiness of many imported batteries and their inappropriate use of the word "fire" in their product names.

Big Clive

"HOMEFIRE" seems like an unfortunate choice of brand name for a battery.

We had a new Hypnos (Lenny Henry/Premier Inn) mattress recently - I am still up all night watching "Tech" Videos, the only difference is the missus doesn't wake (she' out cold) up to tell me how late it is and that we have work tomorrow....... [Bliss]

That would probably result in him doing what he did at first when I moved across. Using a coin to chap loudly and continuously on my bedroom window from the outside..... Ralfy has stereotypical attention deficit disorder, that results in him doing very strange things.

Big Clive

You should change your locks...

MarcT

I need to do exactly what he does and let myself into his house at the equivalent of 3am, chap loudly on his bedroom door with my keys and shout "Wakey-wakey lazy-bones - I've just put a pizza in your oven!!!!"

Big Clive

If Ralfy's disturbing your sleep, you can rectify that (excuse the pun) by doing a 'Home alone' on him, complete with electrified door knob and swinging paint tins? 🚪⚡

Phil in the kitchen

Nothing to go wrong? Quick, send it back. It's got to be a fake...... I get nagged at regularly because of my nighttime alertness mode. They reckon that it's a genetic thing that comes from the hunter/gatherer/guard we used to do thousands of years ago. I've just about always worked afternoons or nights. I've tried all kinds of things to get into working "normally" but I can't get myself to start before 10 am. I might be around before then but never switched on and might be a grump all day.

Paul Noble

You need to have a word with Ralphie about respecting your sleep cycle or maybe regularly go around to his house all bubbly and excited when he's sleeping until he gets the message.

Russell Couper

Its got your stamp of approval. 👍

Love the 20000 mAh battery and the word “fire” associated.

Same unit that comes with a torch I bought, it stopped working after a few uses in the van, the force of the spring caused the edge of the board to break up and pulled the USB socket away from the case, fixed it with a bit of packing. I don't use it any more, I use the black and yellow worklight to charge my 18650s (you reviewed one on here about a year ago), it appears to charge a lot faster, probably at 1A and I can do 2 at a time.

The Tinkering Shed

I hear memory foam mattress toppers are The Business, too. I think I need to replace my mattress and get one of those, I might sleep once in a while and wake up without a sore back....

I have a double one of those chargers somewhere that came with my LED torches. I kind of trusted it as far as I could throw it and bought a four battery one.

Chris Crowther

interesting device but a bit minimalist yes. LOL @ Homefire

Michael Thompson

I'm sorry man. Brothers. Hey speaking of sleep we just got a new mattress. Clive if you haven't done it in 10 years update your mattress. Wow. It's better than a new phone! LOL

Michael Thompson

Clive, it would be interesting if you could compare this with a reputable charger such as a nitecore(?) maybe.

That looks a lot like an 18650 charger that came with a toy, which I managed to let the smoke out last time I tried to charge with it. When I plugged it into a 10W (iPad] charger, it got hot enough to melt the plastic underneath before I noticed what was happening. Not sure if it got liquid inside earlier, or just doesn’t have anything to limit the current to, eg, 500mA (ie, 2.5W), but it definitely seemed like something got waaaay to hot. So I bought a much better (more expensive) replacement 18650 charger.... Ewen

Edit: guessed wrong does 4054 have the same cutoff overcharge logic the Tp4056 boards have❓👍❤️ thanks BC. Hope you get sleep soon🦾 😴

Cerity

I do work at night too. Kinda problematic in school time but oh well

You must have known it was "time to relax to some Big Clive" time here in the NW USA.
