Experimental "junk on my bench" video.

That's not candy in the thumbnail....

This is just an experimental relaxed video talking about stuff that had arrived in the mail.  I guess that makes it a mailbag video.

Is it worth doing more of these?  Should it even be released?

CPC selling that dusk sensor does seem strange. Would they sell a soldering iron as CE and double insulated if it had single insulated wires hanging out of it? Enjoyed the video and nice to not be able to see your bench for all the stuff on it.

Call the videos "What's On My Bench" or "WOMB". On second thought, maybe "SIWO" for "S*** I'm Working On". OK, Ok, I got it! Call the videos "Things I've Piled Up" - "TIPU".

You're a bad influence Clive! I've now established the Blackpool Branch of the Dept of Villany... up to my ears in stripboard, MOSFETs, PWM drivers & Arduino code!

Worth doing more of these Clive. Perhaps once a month to show us what you're planning on doing, not necessary for a recording but more for interest? Maybe use it as a prelude to a live build that you were thinking about doing more of? I think you could get quite a bit out of it and I think we could too. Interesting stuff.

Paul Noble

Yes please, always interesting to see what you buy and to get a sneak peek at what you're thinking project wise

Richard Boyce

"Junk on your bench?" More like treasure trove. More! :)

Wim

I enjoyed the video Clive. Perhaps you can do a PTC demonstration video. I guess a meaty wirewound resistor in series with it and a load.

Nuts 'n' Proud

Do it, and please film the results....

MarcT

I find myself moving one project aside while I work on another more urgent one. Then the same happens again a few days later, until they start to fall off the edge...

Stephen Eyles

I very liked this video! Something I missed your respectable amount of videos. Please do more, if possible. Greatly appreciated :)

Phil They are Dilithium crystals https://www.researchgate.net/figure/France-Nguyen-as-Elaan-of-Troyius-wearing-a-dilithium-crystal-necklace-Photo-copyright_fig1_234008135 I still love the animated BUG

John Harrison

It was this item:- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/293783535224

Big Clive

Not sure what it is, but it's not magnetic.

Big Clive

I really should do that. I think Dave at EEVblog does it just to acknowledge receipt of the items and at least show them.

Big Clive

The Chinese sellers used to do that with LEDs.

Big Clive

It's not something I'd do on a regular basis as it's more of an ambient video.

Big Clive

In this case the load is literally just a few tens of milliamps, so it suits a plain 7805.

Big Clive

I've got the urge to trip one now.

Big Clive

These less-scripted, more stream-of-consciousness videos are nice, and I think it's worth having them now and then. Dunno if the hoi polloi on Youtube would care for them though :)

Charles

The episodic nature of mailbag can set a timeline of events... say so that you can record videos ahead of time. Without worrying about creating. And giving you some rest time, so it’s up to you 😁😁 very nice kit there 🦾

Cerity

I enjoyed the video! Lots of cool projects you've got going on. Glad I'm not the only one with multiple projects on my bench at the same time.

Interesting fact about those orange PTC fuses; they go ever so slightly darker colour when tripped.

Mike Page

Its is interesting to see stuff before it works it's way though process. I don't look for mail bag videos specifically but this was interesting. To release or not? it's a toss up for me. Maybe compromise? Try one of those short story videos. They seem like commercials to me. Make the silly face, hold up the resin bag and call it...Big Clives Shiny little sap sack.

Jim

Rather than 7805 regulators it is worth looking at the TSR 1-2450, TRACOPOWER Through Hole Switching Regulator, 5V dc Output Voltage, 6.5 → 36V dc Input Voltage, 1A Output Current. More expensive than a 7805 but no heat :)

I watch a guy "Electronic repair school" on YT, he does this all the time, as I found out, don't put too much in as not a lot is needed :) Love the Nail Varnish bottle idea.

Yes please :) Empty nail varnish bottles from ebay come with a brush built into the cap and are ideal for rosin IPA flux, crush the rosin first so that it goes through the neck and dissolves faster :)

This is great. Interesting without requiring any real thought from the viewer! Perfect relaxing, low-pressure, entertainment. More mail bag videos, please! 👍🏻

Julian Sharp

Yes you can do more of these. I also would like to see more videos of you building stuff, instead of taking them apart. It won't matter if you cannot fill the gaps with talking all the time.

Bas

I thought that it was a nice insight of "things to come". Although my urge to consume one of the pine 'rocks' concerns me a little ...like who (other than a f***in' Klingon) enjoys the taste of TURPS!

Phil in the kitchen

That flux is just cool to see

I know clive has said he is embarassed about the "mess", but i dont think anyone here would be judgeful - we are far more interested in what Cive has rather than how clive chooses to live. A lot of us are bacherlors, we understand mate.

GL_1_Code1_1A

I agree. This is the sort of video i enjoy the most, its a pic'n'mix of anything and everything. I also agree with the sentiment of "leave these for the patreon supporters" - other than live streams we dont get much exclusive content. A weekly "clives bench" type thing may entice more people to sign up and support the channel. Plus, its like a secret club that you can drop hints into your regular videos

GL_1_Code1_1A

I'd love to see more of your bench, you mention many times about the mountain of "stuff" out of shot, come on Clive, put us out of our misery please..

Mr. Large Clivens - I would say leave these types of videos for your Patreon supporters. I find this type of content especially interesting (I have my own clusterf*ck of pending projects/pieces on my workstation) and I feel like this is a great perk for the people buying you cups and cups of coffee (and spirits to carbonate)

Interested in the squeeze bottle tip. I have bought some precision tip bottles in the past, but the needle tip is a bit to big.

Jeff Whitney

I like it and would like to see more.

Phil Moyer

That's is very interesting about the Rosin or Resin- it is the same stuff as used by violinists to stop the bow from slipping- and costs upto £50 odd for a similar block that was in the tin!! And yes, post bag videos are interesting IMO.

Mike Hughes

Try a Magnet on the Brass wire solder station cleaner, I suspected it was plated since real brass would tarnish.

John Harrison

excellent, nice to see what may be coming up. is it worth doing a similar video, but stuff you've been sent by other 'tubers or patreons? - if nothing else it'll remind you what you've got Bet there'll be a lot of repetition, or even snacks / MRE / sweeties in various states of decay lol

mark barratt

£10 P&P I did not notice the German postage on Ebay for a small round tin of rosin - I am still hurting after 4 years.

John Harrison

These are a nice insight into what happens behind the scenes. However, personally I would prefer they not become so common as to displace normal videos. This sort of thing would work well incorporated into the live streams. Leaving the main channel for the more educational content.

Sibilator

Those rosin chunks look like dried pineapple chunks.

Nani Isobel

Yes please. Like to see more

Interesting video Clive, felt like looking behind the scenes. Definitely looking forward to more of these fascinating insights.

And please do more of these :D

Jonas Otter

Ages ago you could buy the resin at the chemists here in Sweden (as well as all sorts of interesting chemicals), nowadays they only sell prescription medication and prepackaged beauty products and stuff. However, I dissolved the resin in denatured ethanol, easily available here at e g petrol stations for use in camping stoves etc. I believe the Americans call it "rubbing alcohol". Nice to know you can still buy the resin.

Jonas Otter

The solid rosin looks just like the rosin I used on my Violin bow before playing. The only difference is the rosin violinist used is sold in perfect square cost considerably more.

Jeremy Travis

I agree, more of these videos in the future would be very appreciated!

That was fun! Yeah!

Michael Thompson

Yes do more please

A wee sample of Clive's daily grey postal packages from China... (You should see my bench!)

Andrew Donaldson

Just bought a bag of powdered pine resin. Will give that a whirl.

Neil Tonks

Enjoyed it Clive, interesting to see in a ‘what’s coming up’ way and liked that it was not just an unboxing video. Yep the flux works well (I use the colophony one) in IPA - it takes usually overnight to dissolve and I tend to make it quite strong ( think mid / dark colour) for more difficult soldering (eg ground planes / slight corrosion / battery tabs) can be a bit sticky so a wash after with IPA needed. Looking forward to the Christmas project

RDM

Would love to see more of these for sure, though it will probably attract some naysayers that get cranky at anything that resembles an unboxing video.

Michael Buchan

More please. Only a couple of minutes in and loving it.

Yes do more, found it interesting, and informative :-)
