Test run of new lighting panel

For scale, the panel is 1.95m (6'5") tall by 0.92m (3') wide.

I divided the warm white surround in two, and used a bit of software to apply a randomiser to make it look like fluorescent tubes flickering to life.  It's different every time.

This is just a visual test.  I'll tweak and adjust the patterns and timing before it gets installed.

The transition to the random cascade of stars section is a bit rough.  I'll have to clean that up.

The brief delay with the whole panel lit is the "Photo opportunity" feature so people can get a good shot of it fully lit.

You could do something like that with Xlights, Vixen etc.

looking good :)

Jesse_Fish_45

Only one of them is actually pink.

Big Clive

It does have hints of a fruit machine, but also hints of fairground lighting.

Big Clive

Custom made frame to allow re-use each year with a different display.

Big Clive

What kind of frame is that? It looks like one of those insect things you can stick behind a window.

Basti Elektronik

I don't know... Seems rather villainous to me. Looks as though it should bring every epileptic within a 100 meters to their knees in real short order!

Mustafa's Fleas

You could get a job designing the flashing lights on a fruit machine :)

StevesTechShed

Very nice! It also cracks me up that you used modern lighting tech and a microcontroller to mimic the bane of anyone passing through or working in a space with dodgy old fluorescent lights ... that "wait, are they actually going to go on this time, or just flicker at me?" when you flip the switch. :-)

Matt Hessinger

Award yourself 10 Gold Stars, for including 4 Pink Stars representing your Channel

Andrew Donaldson

Love the blue LEDs. Wish they were the random blinking style.

MarkM

Had same - try playing the video in a YouTube app rather then web worked for me

RDM

Love the startup 😀 it looks great - the blue LED ‘curtain’ background works well giving the stars something to ‘float’ in.

RDM

I dunno, it doesn't look awful villainous to me. Shouldn't it have knives sticking out a bit? Play a little stabby-stabby with the viewers? Or FIRE!!!! Another Fanny Flambeau. You could call it Fairy Flambeau. Otherwise, I'd give it a passing grade. Looks nice.

Chuck Kirchner

I am a UNIX guy, so /etc has ALWAYS been pronounced Etsy. It's very confusing.

Peter Laws

It needs a sound to light feature... 😀

MarcT

Do you mean “Etsy” (as opposed to ETC, who make professional stage lighting equipment)?

MarcT

That's studio 2. Much less cluttered than studio 1.

Big Clive

Now actual rotating stars. That would be good.

Big Clive

I think PCBway and some other manufacturers have an option for a resist on both sides of a single sided PCB. I try and avoid through plated holes wherever possible, as it makes repairs a bit harder.

Big Clive

Looks very nice Clive...maybe you could tell something about pic-programming in the future :)

Mike Weijmans

Looking good!

You could sell these on "Etc" or whatever if you were so inclined - very nice display for a dark time of the year (in a very dark year).

Peter Laws

Had forgotten you did a teardown of this stuff last year 😁 rewatched that because the new vid isn’t loading for me. Thanks for spreading Christmas cheer BC 🌲🎊

Cerity

I Just love it!!!!!!

I won't be able to see if then....

Sean Yem

Oh my god it's full of stars 😂

Simon Hopkins

And a glimpse of the workbench. That's not cluttered! (compared to mine...)

Paul Slootman

This video could have used some music! lol

Matt Larson

I think rotating each star randomly makes it less organized. You know, like... stars. It's too neat like this. Fun effects though.

Bas

I bet you can see Clive's house on the IoM from orbit. :-)

Jon Knight

Pretty :)

Simple Electronics

"Photo Opportunity Feature" What a great idea. Next Year "A Floating Induction Lit Display" ?

Andrew Donaldson

That's an excellent display, I am still in the early stages of getting to grips with Arduinos and their abilities. Who knows this time next year... ( Suddenly realised I sound like Del Boy!!)

Mike Hughes

I really like it!

Michael Thompson

Looks great, I do agree softer transitions are nicer though

Richard Boyce

Looks nice in terms of the colours and layout. I prefer softer transitions and avoid flickering effects (not creating a "police-and-ambulance-incident-in-front-of-my-house"-look).

Braile is a 2x3 array so you should be able to make it blink out a message. The only people who would understand it are the ones that couldn't see it.

Mark Trombley

The flouro style start up is a neat trick, it creates a beginning to the sequence, looks very good BC, the blue background is very effective too... 👍🏻

Totally unrelated but can I suggest a small update to the A4 super computer PCB? Plated through holes for the LED contacts so the LED can be mounted on either side of the board. I foolishly paid extra and waited longer for black and blue PCBs to finally realise that the coloured side would be on the back because of the way the LEDs are soldered.

evilution

I love it! The first sparks of the holiday lit in my heart

Michael Thompson

It also helps fill the excess space. There are some commercial frames where the only thing on them is an LED light curtain.

Big Clive

The fluro-style startup will make a few lighting people smile. Great stuff Sir.

Wim

Always love your Christmas feature Clive, nice work mate. 👍

Mike Wynne

The "mesh" of blue leds behind the frame really set the rest off.

John Carr

Nice work! I'll expect it in the post by next week? I'll clear a space.

Neil Tonks

I could, but it would eat channels. It would be possible to add dimming, but it would be restricted to sections dimming together to avoid the PWM frequency dropping too low due to its implementation in software.

Big Clive

Curious, could you use a RGB neon strip, using the department of villainy controller to not only control each color in each star individually, but with enough granular control to dim the channels for maximum brightness? I can't remember exactly how many channels there are but the draw back of course would be it would only control one third as many stars, but I supposed if you wanted to drive two colored together always you could perhaps double them up, at the cost of increasing the load on that channel I am sure.... Even if you just did one this way, it would give you the ability to have one star that changed colours in step with the others to create a second level to the movement dynamic.... If that makes sense.... I am likely explaining my thought poorly

Michael Wellman

Very nice, I needed that to brighten my day. Thank you.
