I may have made Ralfy's new remote too big.

I'm not sure if my brother Ralfy realised what I meant when I said I could repair his old remote by putting it in a new box with a big red button.

https://youtu.be/z7gjQ3OUoIg

To be fair, I didn't say it was going to be LESS than 100mm / 4" in diameter.

I made this right after doing a live stream, so my voice may sound a bit hoarse.

I may have made Ralfy's new remote too big.

Are you aware of the USB arcade button interface PCBs with LED drive? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/132730478870

Big Clive

So, when Ralfy's not controlling his camera with it, is he having friends round to play "Family Fortunes"?

Phil in the kitchen

I love industrial controls and placards

That button is massive!

Frank

Or nasty - delay the sound until he is part way into his whisky video ;-//

I liked the smooth and chunky feel to the professional circular 3" emergency stop buttons and key switches who's bases had square 1/2" high proud surrounds covered in reflective chrome, used on conveyor belt bottling / packaging systems. At a time when I worked in a D.O. on designated pharmaceutical packaging machinery control boxes + 'Simplatron' controllers many decades ago.

Andrew Donaldson

Seniors? I'm 49 and I think that would be a great idea lol

Neil Tonks

I use whatever I can get, but never fully trust it, as there are some materials it just doesn't stay stuck to.

Big Clive

'Scuse me doing like a zillion posts. What's your preferred double-sided tape, Clive? I've seen 3M VHB (which is pricey) do amazing things: in the early 2000s we had a product with a 38Wh lead acid battery held only by VHB and it got through 1m drop tests on all 6 sides and full vibration. Lesser tapes are sometimes so poor as to be laughable. It's difficult to know what you can really trust. I liked your pen scuffing idea.

It's normal for RC codes to be auto-repeated after a short interval (technically the "signal free gap" but I don't think many people care). You may find there's a pin on that 8 pin part for controlling auto-repeat. Of course, if it's one code for both start and stop, you DO REALLY WANT just one message.

Mike Page

I love that stuff but ... it's rather conductive as I found out this week. My idea of conductive might not be yours, I was seeing tens to hundreds of megohms and that was a problem. Normally I expect surface leakage above 10G.

You beat me to it. I was going to mention the History Eraser Button from Ren & Stimpy's "Space Madness." WW3 - same thing?

Mike Page

Interesting! Common IR is modulated with a ~38kHz carrier but that doesn't mean there aren't audio frequency components you can hear (especially after unintentional demodulation!) When I was mucking about with IrDA I found they were driving the LEDs with very short 0.5A pulses. RC codes are less severe but it could be there are some fast current edges radiating "H field" that you're picking up. Is it just one remote or any remote that does this?

Mike Page

Awesome. I was hoping you would use the big one.

I expected a Louis Rossmann sized blob of flux

I didn't even know that the LEDs come out but can confirm that 501 bulbs fit perfectly, probably what it was originally designed for. I suppose old arcade machines would've used 12V systems. The whole LED holder can be removed too using reasonable force.

Matt Tester

I had a sonic controlled toy car,

Neil Tonks

The wedge fit LED looks the same fitment and size as an automotive fitment called 501. They would be much brighter and available in halogen or LED. I progressed over to a hot glue gun instead of double sided tape. Next time, repurpose one of those big Bullshit buttons lol.

evilution

they can be bought in packs of three.. 1 brass ,1 nylon , 1 mild steel ,,,,,they are good and not expensive

John Catterall

You should have added a really annoying buzzer to it as well... triggered by a 555 wired as monostable to sound for an annoying length of time.

I need to get one of those fiberglass scrubber pens. That's a very nice touch.

Michael Thompson

Wonderful! Look at the various improvements you've made! I love love LOVE that arcade-style button, and backlit? -More than the man deserves judging by how willing he is to strike you with branches! Functional and whimsical, it his all of the marks sir. APPROVED

Thousands of seniors be like: yeah now make that a complete remote for my TV please...

We had a Phillips TV clicker. We used to throw coins into a bean bag seat, that also changed the channel. The device was a small steel hammer that hit an aluminium rod that was about 8mm diameter and 30mm long When telling a friend of ours kids in 2008 about changing channels they made jokes how long it would take to find what you wanted to watch on a UK TV back then; they could not believe we only had 3 channels and you very rarely watched BBC2 in the 1970s unless you liked KIPPER ties (Open University).

John Harrison

Sibling trolling 10/10.

Chris Crowther

Great quirky fix such a nice simple but effective circuit

We'll see when he takes it away and tries it with the camera.

Big Clive

Now you've suggested it I probably will. But I do occasionally get dreams where I do a full show load in and wake up to find it was a wasted shift.

Big Clive

Bigger is better

Given he's a mortician prone to ample consumption of fine Whiskey, I'm *quite* certain Ralfy's imagination needs no help whatsoever.

Mike Cowen

I wired one of those big buttons to my garage door opener wall button. Whacking that big switch is so satisfying. I hope he likes it!

Nani Isobel

Along with 'doofer' and 'flappy doofer'

The word "Clicker" has become a universal name for any type of remote.

It's definitely a clicky clicker now. My mother mentioned about a TV my Granddad had around 40 years ago that used a clicker remote. My brother (toddler at the time) had a toy rotary phone that when its dial turned, it happened to emit the right sound to change the TV channel. She said my brother used to tease him regularly by constantly playing with the phone, knowing that the TV would change channels.

Seán Byrne

How many clicks till those (compared to a coin cell) gigantic batteries run out ? Time for some live action testing ! :D

GL_1_Code1_1A

O/T - with the Tattoo off this year, have you had that dream about it really being on and you're not ready?

Mike Page

Go big or go home!

A side note that IR spectrum stuff, I learned by accident that an electric guitar pickup can hear an IR remote. I always wondered how IR light affected the electric pickup until I’ve learned enough YouTube videos it must be the circuitry pushing the light that actually made noise. They’re electromagnetic pickups so my guess is inductors, but still not sure.

Jim

Love it! Who doesn't love a a BIG red Button?

Dr Andy Hill

The original was clearly inadequately sized... this one is perfection.

Mark Hazlewood

Please do not show Kim Jong Un. He will think it's a big magic button to start WW3.

Did it work? You got the wife hooked!

Neil Tonks

This is exactly what I would do, I hate those tiny remotes. I have a couple of square arcade buttons in a button box on my home server, with an arduino they send commands to Windows and get responses over serial to update the lit button. They look like the buttons on doors in Alien too, which is a bonus. Massive overkill but very satisfying to work with the twist-lock microswitches, I did use crimp spade connectors too.

Matt Tester

Something about size matters?

Wonder if the button might've been a bit smaller, had he not eschewed participating in your "live-stream" … jus' sayin'

Please can you film his reaction when you give it to him 🤣🤣

I'm sure that he will seek revenge in a suitable way 😁

Apparently siblings never stops killing each other.
