OMG! Unflattering thumbnail.

Something's glitching.   Youtube doesn't like my compression destroying mega Gallium panel.

Here it is though, and it takes around three hours to build, mainly because you need to solder one lead of each LED first and then reflow it while lining it up with gentle finger pressure.  A larger PCB assembly frame would have been a good option here.

OMG! Unflattering thumbnail.

That tears it, I really like putting in the SMD resistors much more that the through-hole ones. Wow is it faster, even with iron and tweezers. I got 90 of the suckers installed at lunch time today. I had previously prepped the PCB and installed the first 18, but today was just... the process. Just lovely to be in that place, that... singularity.

Michael Thompson

No, I love the process it is most relaxing! I meant my yammering away about it! I loved the patterns I was seeing in yours!

Michael Thompson

Search this sellers listings for 5mm slow. https://www.ebay.com/usr/suiyanr

Big Clive

Does anyone have a link to 5mm diffused slow color changing LEDs? My searches are coming up a bit short and I can't find where I got them from years ago.

Michael Thompson

It's a computer from the 60s show "Time Tunnel"

Gordo

With 1K resistors mine is 500mA peak settling down to 250mA average from a 5V supply. With lower value resistors it will be higher.

Big Clive

What is the current draw? Have I missed that someplace?

Michael Thompson

You have to login first though. Unless you are logged in you don't get to upload the zip file.

Stuart Goggin

Go to jlcpcb.com and click on "quote now", then click on "add your gerber file"

I cannot find that. I must be clueless. :(

Michael Thompson

Each light represents a random gun being fired in America.

Big Clive

If you go to their quote page at www.jlcpcb.com/quote Click the button for uploading gerbers and upload the entire zip file it should fill everything out as a standard green board with white screen print.

Big Clive

Go to this page:- jlcpcb.com/quote And click "add your gerber file" then upload the whole zip file.

Big Clive

I'm ready to order the boards and have downloaded the .zip Gerber files. I found the process a little confusing though, and couldn't find where to upload them on the site.

Michael Thompson

I was thinking something similar Colin, A logo in the middle with a different color blinker so you only ever kind of see it. might be to subtle, a solid clive logo in the middle would be nice.

Jim

Is this board big enough that you could spell "big clive" in different color, regular leds, then have the flashing around it?

Really want to do one of these as it looks amazing, what info do I need to input on the JLCPCB quote page please, knowing my luck I will put something in wrong and receive 5 a4 paper weights. Thanks in advance.

Jono Harley

Could just be backwards, he does that now and again, and with this many LED's it's hard not to :\

Dustin

You have such a greater appeal than other electronic channels due to such a down-to-Earth / through-hole component electronics, that I hope to follow in your footsteps as a 35-year-old. haha Pathetic FYI, I can't afford shit, so please let me know if you have any kits you're sending out to Patreons (I'll keep an eye out for future stuff). This message brought to you by whiskey / moonshine influence.

11 from the left and 4 up is a dead led :(

I like it! So much, in fact, that after seeing it on yesterday's stream, I ordered some up.

but what does it *mean*? Surely every light has a purpose and meaning?

Moz in Oz

That looks really cool.

Eric Latour

I want one i want one iiiiiiii want one .....

Like it a lot.

Hi Clive how can I get the boards I want to do 4 of them I don’t do anything small and prices of course cheers Steve

Steve Nuttall

A big sheet of neoprene on the bench works very well for holding loads of components, especially ones all the same size.

A thing of beauty! I’d buy several

Kevin Hardisty

I found that soldering the 6x4 inch 54 leds and resistors very therapeutic- really enjoyed making it, and my wife loves it with the multicolour rainbow slow flashing leds. waiting for some more led's to arrive, along with 500 resistors from Gadgets Kingdom. Great Idea to put the files up for us to get the pcbs made professionally- saves a lot of hassle. Thanks Clive.

Mike Hughes

You just need a cool beard. No sun glasses required.

Agreed. I would buy this kit in a heartbeat. That looks amazing! I like that very much. Well done sir! Well done! Yes one of my concerns when building my chaos panel was making certain that all of the LEDs were seated flat, which was just a matter of re-flowing the solder whilst applying a bit of finger pressure. It is an extra step, but a necessary one. My other two were painting the PCB which was fine and fitting the PCB into the frame, which required a tiny bit of sanding but then fit so perfectly afterward that it made my heart glad. Would it be too over the top ironic to imagine that panel mounted in one of those super-fancy (baroque?) old timey frames? Conflicted over the mental image... I may have to order a couple of these PCBs...

Michael Thompson

Clive posted the a4 zip above http://www.bigclive.com/A4%20gallium.zip

Cerity

Love that, I have had an obsession with LEDs ever since they first came out. I use to spend hours desoldering components from old electrical items and making up my own lighting displays using old motors and gears from video and CD players and turn tables from record players. My mates used to love me bringing my light inventions to their parties.

That looks good. It looks really good. Looking forward to seeing it in the live stream. I might need to wear sunglasses though.

Zeedijk Mike

I like it. Most impressive

Very nice Clive. I would buy one in kit form. Do you plan on releasing the files so we can have boards made up. Would be easier than a kit.

Looks very good! Yeah, music does make those kind of tasks seem to take less time.

Rocco Rizzo

Jolly good bit of work! Green looks excellent - could be part of the Doctor Who sets from the 1980s. Now I can't help thinking of the RGB idea that came up on Thursday at this size. With all the colour combinations, the effect would be fab - especially with a bit of judiciously putting in a few more red than blue LEDs to balance the colour mix a bit.

WHOA! It looks amazing! Been wanting to mention it since the original version, but the patterns it makes reminds me of "Conway's Game of Life", or "Life Genesis". Someone could probably use this paired with AI to make a really strong sort of encryption.

Brooks Andersen

Damn. I fixed it. It's really hard to spot a dead LED up close. It was an intermittent solder bridge.

Big Clive

Where the blue one was. It just fits in without a frame.

Big Clive

You can order them direct from JLCPCB with this zip file:-

Big Clive

You'll find it so much easier to buy a set from JLCPCB with this zip file full of gerbers:- http://www.bigclive.com/A4%20gallium.zip

Big Clive

If you made up a kit for these, I would get one.

That looks amazing. Very nice!

Nani Isobel

you could put a static BC/DC logo in the middle and the rest flashing.

David Turmelle

Live Stream Game to spot the LED that isn't working.

Andrew Donaldson

Man I would really love to have one for my shop.

Charles Bruckner

The LED spacers in things like the PiDP-8 kit make it a lot easier to keep LEDs aligned while soldering. Uxcell a12081300ux0268 is one example.

John Rehwinkel

Where are you going to position this "beast" for tonight's bash?

Awesome Dude..... HypnoSex!

Green is my favourite colour, this is amazing! Love it! Keep up the great work clive.

Jono Harley

You finished it! You crazy bastard

Coil B

I have to get and build one of these, might take a long time with my vision loss though, but would still be fun... let me know how I can get a pcb when available. Awesome job

Sean Yem

Now that looks wicked Clive, time to do some pcb etching I think

Mike Wynne

WOW how can I get one Clive ?

Bloody nice work! Was wondering about that board and how big it is. Could you spell out BC/DC in static LEDs and use flashing for the rest? Would be a freak-out to have one of them going on a Sat live stream.

John Carr

Amusingly, the LEDs around it seem to be almost perfectly in sync for a while, so they acted like a blinking cursor around the dead one...

I've got to make some of them look good

Looks amazing Clive! FYI the LED at position (11,4) from the bottom left is not working.

Now make them blink at random speeds!!! j/k πŸ˜‚

Lostngone

Nice to see what the diffused green looks like compared to the water clear ones I used. Definitely good solder practise. If you have a photo frame you can use a matching sized piece of foam to make your own assembly frame, worked great for me with the small one.

Matt Tester

Great, now I need to order pcbs. Might have to make my own in American 8.5x11” paper size, to make it easier to find a frame that fits.

Elliott Krimchansky

Looks great Clive!
