The JUGEE battery teardown was arduous.

I've made two versions of the JUGEE 1.5V rechargeable lithium cell video.  One is 3 minutes long (I'm about to upload it) and the other is 36 minutes long, and involves dremeling the lithium cell case.

Even after that it doesn't answer all the questions, because the resin they used was very hard and took fire to remove, but still didn't reveal the number of the mystery 16 pin control chip.  It may be proprietary.

Technically speaking, it could all be done with a 5 pin custom chip.

The construction is physically very good though.

Comments

I would consider setting it on fire. All plastic and carbon would burn, leaving copper intact since it has very high melting temperature.

Getting exciting chemicals like that can be tricky here due to the complexities of ferries and hazardous materials.

Clive try methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), tetrahydrofuran (THF), toluene, benzene or chloroform. They all dissolve PK resin rather well.

Paint stripper with DCM isn't available to consumers in the UK. Dunno about the IoM though. It is still on the market, but only to professional decorators/furniture restorers (notionally).

Thanks for your efforts, Clive!

Michael Thompson

you could try DCM aka paint stripper but it may destroy all the components in the process

I'm a big fan of these lithium AAs. I have a GP2X handheld that eats even the best NiMH cells fast, but these provide full 1.5v each (instead of 1.2ish). The GP2X is very voltage sensitive, it really needs 3v + to run properly, 2x NiMH AAs struggle to provide more than 2.8v.

Hah: a new patreon benefit could be all the destructive "just a moment" cuts :) J/K don't need to make more work for Clive!

Greg Bell

It works with some resins. If left for a day or two the resin crumbles off.

Would be interesting so see the videos when they come out.

NightshadeLenar

good! I noticed lately that you had edited out the taking apart parts of the videos to make them more succinct and I was missing the distraction. Havnt seen the vise of knowledge in a while :P

Michael Gilchrest

I don't think so.

OBTW: When repairing a burned trace on a PCB that requires higher current, try using solder-wick! I've brought back from the dead many a VFD with this technique. ;)

It's after 1 AM on the Isle of Mann! Do you never sleep?

So is it acetone that you use Clive to try and dissolve the epoxy? Does it have to soak to be effective in any capacity?
