Outdoor light - total teardown

I think this is the first time I've depotted one of the little waterproof drivers.  The potting material was surprisingly crumbly and easy to remove.

This light features the usual mystery-earth, but with an added twist.

As I just posted on Youtube. I got this style heatsink in a 20-pack but mine have a COB on chip with no external power supply. As a 20-pack they were quite cheap at around $11.35 a light and were shipped inside the US, so I had them quickly. They are still up for sale at https://www.ebay.com/itm/202014967743 Mine were also earth, the earth wise connected to a tapped screw hole inside the plastic lens. and I measured it by touching inside the tapped hole for the plastic cover. Power draw was only about 30W but they were plenty of bright.

Is it me or are the lens screws left hand thread? I know GB is a left hand drive country but...

"let's poke that and see if it's moist" - another one to add to the Classic Clive lexicon

Heat and acetone have their own merits. Using boiling water is less destructive to the component housings if it works.

Big Clive

Haha, maybe they forgot the hardener? ;-)

Hagen

I believe acetone is the weapon of choice.

AlfaGuy

Pretty sure BC has mentioned safe and unsafe ways to decompose resin, not sure

Clive, try boiling water for depotting, I have liberated and thus reverse-engineered many a module. It's a real pain but most resins go very pliable and can be picked abd peeled to bits under the water. I use a fan to blow away the steam too to not fog up my (safety) glasses. Lol at the YT title "Shady ebay light"

Wow that potting stuff was actually pretty great. Just enough to encapsulate the circuitry yet crumbly and removable for repair. -must be a mistake

Michael Thompson

The potting gunk is probably some waste material from industry. :)

Wim

Twisted mystery earth? F yeah

Michael Thompson

Hopefully that one is an isolated 12V module inside.

Big Clive

Look at that schematic again. GND and ZCS are connected together between the current sense resistors and the inductor. Weird???

Chuck Kirchner

Saves time...

A PCB module potted in poundland chocolate ! Who would have thought........

I just received a bunch of LED meteor lights and the use the same power supply

Earl Plotner

Pre-rusted screws.. nice :)

Mike Hanley

Was it just my TV, or when Clive was moving the light around the straight lines on the case went a bit weird

Neil Tonks

Nice looking lamp, unusual way of mounting the driver

Mystery earth with a twist. Shaken not stirred πŸ˜‚
