Y'know how YouTube "does stuff"....

YouTube Loves making changes that drastically reduces the amount that they are having to pay out for Ads. But I’m pretty sure that this was the Mid-Roll Ads changes that they automatically rolled out for everyone who had videos over 10 minutes vs the 7 minutes before.

I'm not aware of changing anything. The YouTube upload defaults are as they were and there doesn't seem to be any option for defaults like that on the phone I upload with.

It's a very popular way of doing things and playing dumb! Online games have been doing that for ages. Unless some one starts a class-action law suit and subpoena Google computer records, nothing will get done about it, and Google just made Millions in one shot. Douchebaggery at its best!

Other channel owners have been complaining about recent changes to youTube add placement, but in the opposite direction. Old videos they posted without adverts have recently had add breaks inserted at 15 minute intervals without their knowledge. I've certainly noticed an increase of the number of [Skip Ad] buttons I've had to click recently.

Thankfully? I’m 999 subscribers short of having to deal with those problems. But constantly hearing about these problems really makes me wonder how many creators have just stopped posting for similar reasons where the platform just screws them over for no reason and there’s no recourse.

Youtube stopped showing your videos on my home screen. I have to go to your channel to see recent videos.

I use YouTube Red. The fact you actually get paid for us few who have it is good. If you need money, Clive, say so and I’ll increase my pledge. I have a low pledge because you earlier have stated that you had an ok income here and thus I have supported channels like franlab with a higher amount.

The money I did earn on those videos (about a quarter of normal) must have been from YouTube Premium.

Clive, do you have a sense for how revenue is shared from the people that opt out of the ads? Example: YouTube premium? Is there any way to know at this point if YouTube premium subscriptions help you any more financially than the old system does now? It sucks when you know YouTube’s Motivation is to take Clives's money yet I pay the premium to remove ads. I hope it works better for you Clive, I watch 80% youtube media now so I'm at there mercy as well. Does this make sense?

My brother Ralfy had his entire whisky review channel demonetized several years ago. It was complex getting it monetized again. That's why you have to keep an open mind and not make YouTube your main source of income.

Fun YouTube cautionary tale- About 10 years ago I built a website for someone. Built it on my own space and put a couple ads on it just so the owner could see what it looked like. I tied the ads to my own account just as a placeholder. The guy came over, looked at the site and f-ing immediately clicked on an ad. I yelped but the deed was done. It took about a week to get the nasty-gram from Google. Account cancelled for being an evil commission thief. Made some videos that were getting some hits. Went to monitize... NOPE. Banned. I basically took down the more popular videos and just quit. There is no appeal, nobody to talk to. They just DGAF.

I always turn off mid-roll adverts for this channel, but initially had them enabled for the streams. But they were putting huge amounts of adverts in the first half hour of the streams, so I disabled it.

The streams are a different channel. It only seems to affect new videos over the past month. If you viewed them from here the adverts wouldn't have been enabled yet.

In regards to YT Premium, it's super beneficial to users because no ads (plus a couple side benefits like music/video downloads onto phones) and from Linus Tech Tips streams they earn a LOT more per view than normal accounts (couldn't find it, but he mentioned it) as I recall.

Interesting, yes I also use the email notifications, I better check .. same thing the smart phone was driving me crazy blipping and vibrating every 30 seconds , I switched back to a regular phone and use the smart phone only offline with downloaded videos & whatnot

Would love to see you youtube creators doing something like a unqiue hashtag for midroll ad free videos. I was talking to Andreas Spiess, the swiss radio guy, as well. Something like #NoMidRollAds. Dave from EEVblog should be open for this as well.

I don't know if it's related, but it appears youtube turned off email notification for everybody last week. So if anyone was still using those (I was), then they will no longer be notified of new videos on channels they subscribe to. I get the patreon notifications, so I am still getting these videos, but I know I am already missing out on videos on other channels that I don't get patreon notifications for. Depending on how many people like me live in the past and don't have a phone going ping every 30 seconds, that could also lead to reduced views and ad revenue.

How strange, I'm pretty sure they kept putting ads onto the beginning of most of your videos, and streams for that matter. Every refresh on the stream led to another ad, before the streams resumed. Just as well you did notice though. I suspect YouTube would have cared little for the ruined livelihood of another content creator, even if it was their fault.

Not really, because they lose out on their part of the revenue too.
