I tried it with just paper towel using my dehumidifier as it has a HEPA filter that I could compare with - Without its HEPA filter or the paper towel the PM2.5 meter started at 33ug/m3. With a paper towel covering the air inlet, the reading dropped to 27 and with the HEPA filter inserted, the reading dropped to 25. When I tried a cotton hand towel, the reading returned back to 33, so it appeared to have no effect on the PM2.5 level.

I'm tempted to try this with the outlet through a tube or box large to test my generic eBay bought PM2.5 meter inside. Then raise the room's PM2.5 level (a smouldering match works well) and see how the level compares between the room and when placed in the filter's outlet using different types of paper on the inlet.
