just getting around to watching.. long week.. wiring in the .us.. it depends on which state you are in.. most blue states have good building codes... ie; 2x4's have to be close, etc... some red states there is no codes at all wiring/or building..

Scott Traynor

It was grim. But lessons have been learned by some people. (But sadly not by others.)

Big Clive

Did you watch the stream? Did you hear the bit where I explained how people should always be aware of the speed at which fire can spread, and look for alternative exits to the ones they entered by. There was a significant section of the stream dedicated to the incident and others like it. I've also discussed this in the past to drum home the importance of the details above, and will discuss it again in the future. Things like this shouldn't be hidden.

Big Clive

During the stream I explained what happened and compared it to other similar fires. I showed that it's important to choose flame retarded materials, and how flame spread occurs. I also talked about the chained up fire exits. Disasters like this need to be discussed on a regular basis to make sure that people are aware that things like this can happen, and how to avoid them.

Big Clive

Well; now we are into the Live Stream, I must admit to not being very impressed by the choice of title and thumbnail. Remind us again just how many died in the original 1973 "Summerland Stream" and how they died?

Angus McLean

Or at least a Jagermunion to Cuthbert the Caterpillar as he's about to get sued to smithereens by M&S. As this is the channel of trash snacks and ripoff goods.

Russell Couper

You should totally get a Colin the Caterpillar for devouring on tonight's stream.

Russell Couper

no she was gone by then. but then After Season was done, the show was canceled.. season 2 was designed that way for ITC to reapprove it

Scott Traynor

It was not Sylvia that caused issues with season 2, but Muricans https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g85g2KM3sts

Gerry Anderson day was this Wednesday. So let's have a drink to both of them as there contribution to fireball XL5, Joe90, sting Ray, thunderbirds, Captain scarlet, UFO, SPACE1999, Terahawks and lastly space precinct. SPACE1999 was not the same after Sylvia split between series. She influenced clothing style during the 1970s.

Carters Steam Fair is staying put in Maidenhead this year due to Covid restrictions.

Andrew Donaldson

Chained up firedoors, something that would be repeated in the stardust disaster in Dublin some 8 years later with a similar loss of life. Can't have anyone sneaking in now can we.

Denis Looby

Arnold J. Rimmer ;) did a documentary series... and one? of the episodes was on trains https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6qcNts50pqx5Yw_6UHODQDytC0hG2WVH

Scott Traynor

how about drinking to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sylvia_Anderson she wasnt a uber scientist, but she was the one who "Stitched" together so many of the anderson projects, Season 1 of Space 1999, etc.

Scott Traynor

In Cornwall steam events Trevithick day (April), Cornish Steam & Country Fair(August) and just over border in Devon Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre. https://www.fairground-heritage.org.uk/

I love the history of steam. My Great, Great, Great Grandfather Andrew Tulley helped in the building of Stephenson's first engine, which pulled coal in Dapple Duck Colliery.

Andrew Donaldson

Very true as just watched the youtube interview and one of the main reasons besides internal tiles was the building was clad in Oroglas® - Cast acrylic sheet. So just like Grenfell cladding building with combustible plastic sheets does not work!!!

N. Shaun Tremayne

People indeed never learn. I have been promoting the various digests from the Grenfell Inquiry to anyone active in Engineering. Doesn't matter if you're not a builder or an architect there are lessons here for everyone but particularly TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. Don't assume someone else will. Responsibility is a chain, not a point. The fire started electrically.

Mike Page

It was also recommended to me. The algorithm is probably recommending it to all Clive’s subscribers.

Watched a video about that place a few months ago. A very grim story indeed.

Simeon

Vaughn B. YT recommended that video to me also, fundamentally the issue was the planning process, one party designed the structure whilst another designed the internals, neither took a fire engineering approach which led to the tragedy. In construction today (at least where I am) this wouldn't be allowed, fire engineering is a fundamental element of any building design, even if a fire were to break out the distance and time to escape are carefully considered and life safety systems are mandatory to provide the best possible chance of survival. The Summerland story is one all architects and building engineers should be aware of, maybe the are?

The Tinkering Shed

Can we raise a drink to Richard Trevithick who was Born: in 13 April 1771 250 years ago who was engineering inventor of the high pressure steam engine and train. Have a look at some local engineers recreate the puffing Devil. https://youtu.be/FEjGBgBxSNM. Which we have riding through the our streets on Trevithick day which has been cancelled this year again. He worked alongside Humphrey Davey and William Murdock who both worked for Mr Watt.

N. Shaun Tremayne

Holy Shit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yQNNTx4XHw

Michael Thompson

Yes. It was scary read. Did you ever go in its later incarnation. Probably bad memories for many from the era. Looked pretty neat even for the time.

Vaughn B.

Yes. It has a grim educational story that people never learn from.

Big Clive

Oh dear. Those are the remnants of the old Summerland leisure centre. I had never heard of this until a recent YouTube recommendation. One of the more deadly example of poor mishmash building design, material selection and fire system failure from what I read. I imagine there are more than a few people on the island that were impacted by this. Apparently the hillside could collapse if they remove some of the remaining concrete material.
