Cost of new filter same as complete unit?

I thought I'd get a proper pleated filter "air purifier" from eBay. It's quite nice in a physical sense, although the circuitry isn't quite perfect.
https://youtu.be/hYvGIFHCLyw
The pleated filter is roughly equivalent to 12 sheets of the tissue on the square 3D version I showed recently, but if changing the paper every week it would end up with double the area versus this unit after its suggested 6 month filter life.
One of the most notable things about this unit is that its replacement filters cost about the same as the entire unit.
If it's a loss leader, then the race is on to identify some alternative, non-filter application for the base/fan unit with ioniser & smoked grey lid (bonus: you can sell the brand-new, unused filter on eBay and get most of your money back)..

Well there it is! Yes, I heard this was in field testing last year in an interview with one of the scientists who worked on the lab validation. They didn't expect to offer it this soon. I guess the tests went well. From the 2018 press release" "Ushio’s Care222 is presently used for unoccupied spaces with ongoing studies to make Care222 the future solution for all occupied and unoccupied microbial reduction solutions. " But currently on the website "Recent studies indicate that higher doses of filtered UV light emitted from the Care222 modules pose a minimal health risk to human skin or eyes."

I didn't. My guess is that it might have been for the UV LEDs if installed.

They absolutely need their negative connection referenced to ground. They way they work is by creating a charge with reference to ground, so the current will find a way back. Grounding them will make them more efficient.

The metal plats is floating, so would at best have taken a charge, but I doubt it would have helped.

I wonder how the 222nm LEDs will compare to the Ushio excimer lamps for output, life and efficiency.

Did you try the third button? I'm wondering if has any function.

I wonder now, if there is a way to hack this to use, for example karcher a223 filters. Much cheaper.

Feedback SHOCK - I have a few 12v ionisers from a few years ago and when I run them via the bench PSU you can hear a causing a spark discharge in the PSU every few seconds.
When I run it from a 12v battery you can feel the high voltage feeing back to the battery when you put you finger of the the battery terminals.
I did try grounding the 12v battery to a mains earth, I am sure I was still getting a shock off the battery.
I also tried to measure the voltage on the battery and the meter leads would give me a shock from where the moulded plastic changes colour (that was the biggest surprise)
All said and done I have decided not to use them.

To my mind, the smaller the device, the harder it is to obtain the replacement filters.

3D print some sort of framework that you can just wrap something else around perhaps. You'd get less surface area but I think you can buy rolls of HEPA filter from various places. What about electrostatic HEPA filters?

wasn't there a metal plate directly screwed in above the ionizer . what effect would that have had on the output from the end of the ionizer wire if any . or what if that metal plate was grounded

The folks at intl-lighttech (dot) com do offer real (275nm) UVC LEDs. Not cheap. These LEDs do not emit visible light and will burn your skin and damage your eyes so default caution statement inserted here. Not available to the public yet, no I don't have a source, are the new 222nm UVC LEDs which are safe for skin and eye buy bad news for nano-scale critters. These will be big news in the filter business once production ramps up.

Try generic lawn mower air filters, there's a range of shapes etc. They sell for a few $.

I'd just vacuum the used filter out. Maybe a bit of compressed air from the other side.

I wonder if it would be advantageous to 3D print and enclosure or adapter for an automotive cabin air filter or engine air filter, instead of using toilet paper. A quick Google shows that they cost under $10 us for a pretty big one. And most of them come with a gaskets already installed.

I got a xaomi purifier. It's quite big but dead silent on low. I don't think the filter is expensive and the filter is huge.
I like that it has a constant measure of the particles per m³ and you can have it automatically turn up until it gets to a healthy level.
I have 2 xaomi led strips, desk lamp and bedside lamp with the air purifier in my bedroom and it's all controllable from the app.
I am very impressed with their stuff and it's not expensive. Of course if I had the time I would prefer to make my own. But I have twin 5yo kids and I look after them myself

Low speed: 29 dba, 30m3/h, 1.5w power, Medium: 49dba, 90m3/h, 6.5w and High: 60dba, 140m3/h and 16w. Runs off 24v DC. No annoying hum from the large fan. They recommend cleaning the pre-filter every 2-4 weeks and replacing the HEPA filter every 4 months.

I just picked up one of the new Ikea air purifiers ... $55 USD in the store and then the replacement HEPA filter was $5.50 each. That seems much more reasonable! They also have an optional charcoal filter which was out of stock... The Ikea unit has 3 speeds and the lowest is almost silent while 2 and 3 are quite a bit louder but also move a lot more air. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/foernuftig-air-purifier-black-60488069/
