2021-05-11 17:37:23 +0000 UTCWhen Clive did one of his dooby videos the capacitor was in series with the mains before the bulb. I've been wondering if a capacitor could be added to the plug itself rather than the bulb. Meanwhile I just bumped a sylvania 4.5 watt bulb while moving the lamp and the glass cracked perfectly around the base. I have the 4 filaments exposed now and working perfectly, I'm going to try add 4 more filaments since I have the opportunity. I could never crack one again like this if I tried.

I'm somewhat sensitive to the stroboscopic flickering that many of my Doobyed bulbs have and all my attempts to get at the filter capacitor have been impeded by the screw\wire attachment being a PITA.

2021-05-06 19:30:08 +0000 UTCProbably late to the game, but whatever... Do you have any good trick for making a reliable electrical connection to stainless steel? Without: hard soldering (I have an ability to solder stainless, but it's embedded in plastic), spot-welding (I haven't got the device yet), crimping (no possibility), drilling (too small), adding screws (no room), adding spring contacts (unreliable, they're exactly what I'm seeking to replace)... Is there a way to stick something to it that has low resistance (it's a weak signal) and won't come off? If you have nothing, never mind, I'll manage - I just wanted to pick your brain and see if you have an elegant solution to this.

2021-05-06 09:46:52 +0000 UTCAs a time served sparks with OPINIONS on Part P and all the rest of the current (sorry) testing issues, what’s your opinion on DIY sparkies. Although I understand the apparent reasoning behind the rules, the situation as it stands is obviously open to certifying bad workmanship, but prohibits competent individuals from doing their own work. 2021-05-06 08:29:45 +0000 UTCHow are things like 4 or 6 way powerboards with surge protectors tagged and tested, as I can see the testing process killing MOVs or failing the test? Almost every powerboard you can get today has a MOV based surge protector in them, but never see Gas Discharge Tubes (GDT) as well like use to be seen in the high end ones. Just a case of cost cutting? MOVs come down in price but GDTs stayed relatively the same? How effective are these MOV only surge protectors? Any hacks to make them better? How effective would 4 NE2 neons in series be at passing transients above 360 volts?
2021-05-06 08:27:26 +0000 UTCInteresting channel! Now that I've thoroughly watched all of Clive's videos, I need something fresh. Don't worry though Clive, I'm still one of your earliest and biggest fans of course :)

2021-05-06 07:28:59 +0000 UTCI'd like to see something with LED's contrary to the usual "what can we do to make this more efficient and last longer", and see if we can take a cheap lamp or torch and drive it harder, and potentially see a) how much more light we can drag out of it, and b) how close to the edge the manufacturers are actually running the components. I'm a sucker for buying lamps and torches that are uber bright, and will always go for the highest wattage I can, which sort of defeats the whole energy saving ability of LEDs, I guess. More power!

2021-05-05 23:57:35 +0000 UTCWhat about making a super bright LED light using one of those cob arrays. Something like 200w. sorts of heatsink solutions and driving it at various power levels. Running of 12v via the car or lipo. I have made a few different types and tried a motor speed controller to dim. But getting over 100w is difficult. I want to make a flood light that is portable and I can attach to my car because I drive at night often and dodging kangaroos, Wallabies, rabbits and also I have a few feral deer near my place. 2021-05-05 21:55:26 +0000 UTCNot really a question, but more of a suggestion for a toast. Computer security researcher Daniel "Dan" Kaminsky discovered a fundamental flaw called as DNS cache poisoning within the Internet's domain name system in 2008. If not discovered by a person with good intentions, this vulnerability could have led to impersonation of websites including but not limited to the websites of banks and health portals and interception of sent emails, just to name a few examples. And this is just the prime of his many discoveries to make the technical world a safer place. He also had a key role in discovering the Sony BMG rootkit scandal by estimating the amount of networks infected. Untortunately, Dan recently passed away but his legacy will be with us for a long time. I know that we try to avoid to talk about death during the stream, but anyways, I really think he's worthy of one. Cheers.
