As time has gone on I have swayed between the extreme ends of ozone indoors. I now believe that it does have a place, but only in trace quantities equivalent to natural outdoor air. It may actually be an essential part of indoor air, since the active elements dissipate quickly. The problematic ozone units are the ones like the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze that gushed out high levels of ozone.

Aside from working in the industry, I have asthma and now long covid, I can vouch for the fresh air is best approach, I am pretty sensitive to air quality and can tell when an ozone producing air cleaner is in use in a room, I do use ozone myself but not when I am in the room, opening the window is always the best option for me.

This was a good conversation, I have to be careful what I say here, the company I work for are actively selling air cleaning units, I have made my points and highlighted the research (or lack thereof) and have left it at that. The main aspect of the business is window control, we use a system called NV Embedded to monitor the indoor air quality and outdoor conditions to control the windows, blinds and heating TRVs to control the indoor climate and keep the air quality high without dumping all the heat. The system can open the windows in increments of 1% (percentage of stroke length of chain actuator) to accurately control the level of ventilation. We install this system all over Scotland and the north of England so the issue of outdoor climate is pertinent, the system was designed in Denmark so is perfectly geared to temperate climate zones.
