Yeah - another ozone video. (Sorry.)

Now I've released at least one non-ozone video I get to do another.  With the ongoing pandemic I've been exploring stuff like this too much, but I'll get over it soon .

This weird unit has been around for a while and has some odd and seemingly pointless retro circuitry in it.

Yeah - another ozone video. (Sorry.)

Haha. Just checked, mine is a pure mate. I'll do your multimeter trick to see if it's putting out negative charge. Mine is on my bedroom windowsill right above my head and have never smelled O3 from it nor had and undesirable effects. I'm curious now to open it up. It does hiss very quietly

They do sell them as ionisers. Ozone seems to have become a taboo word due to the Karens.

Big Clive

I have this, at least it's the same case. Was labelled as an Ioniser though, not O3. I ought to take a look and see if it is the same as yours

Simon Howroyd

Yeah I think that's the basic idea. I had one about 15 years ago that I'd bought at a thrift store and I remember the "filter" was several vertical plates that were parallel to eachother and the air would blow past them. The dust would accumulate on those plates and they could be pulled out and washed off. My main memory of the thing is how absolutely disgusting it was every time I cleaned it.

wow ... never thought I the words "too much ozone" is a bad thing !! ... Intresting find tho ! Just visited their site and suspiciously enough an air cleaner with similar concept to your magic air cleaner ... https://puremate.co.uk/product/puremate-hepa-air-purifier-with-4-speed-settings-allergies-dust-pollen/ but sadly no ozone / izonsation !

I'd love to build one of your Minion ionisers!

Mike Hanley

Either the manual is lying then or I misread or misremembered it. Any are easily possible, of course I can't find it at the moment.

Dr Andy Hill

That reads so deliciously wrong.

Michael Thompson

I had a bit of a chuckle when I saw the funny whitish circles on the front plate. It's a contradiction in terms. The aluminium is anodized to prevent corrosion, but the electrons eat the anodizing medium as it works. This causes corrosion anyway. Great teardown, though. Keep 'em coming. I love this stuff.

Chuck Kirchner

That makes the tiny little Chinese modules that muster 10 to 20V across the same meter even more impressive.

Big Clive

I've never taken a full size one of those apart. If I understand correctly, the air passes through a charged mesh and then oppositely charged fins to attract the dust.

Big Clive

It just keeps running though. I thought it might shut off if it was for vehicle battery monitoring.

Big Clive

That's what I thought it would be, but it purely measures incoming supply voltage.

Big Clive

If you're looking for new ideas that are still in the same category, I'd be curious to see you tear down and/or design an electrostatic air filter.

I've got one of these. It came with a cigarette lighter cable as well, so that'll probably be the reason for the low voltage protection.

Ian Cooper

It looks like it is designed to run off battery. When the voltage is low it shuts off to prevent further discharge of the battery. At least for the two zeners for the high voltage module. No guesses about the third zerner.

Nani Isobel

I use it as a whole flat ozonizer, I did get a sore throat / felt chesty when I started using it first but seemed to get used to it after a while, it's not in my bedroom it's in my living /dining /lab/computer room. Interestingly over time it has attracted dust to it's own power supply lead as well as some around the unit.

Dr Andy Hill

I didn't know about the aroma hole! I read the manual well then!

Dr Andy Hill

I've got one of these. Low V means you need to clean the needles according to the manual.

Dr Andy Hill

Clive if you set about exploring a glass a water I'm pretty you would find some new insight into it, so stop apologizing! I dinna care!

Michael Thompson

Was it designed for battery power - low voltage indicator = change batteries?

It's all good stuff! I've no complaints.

Andrew Donaldson

0.73V across 10M is 73nA or 456 billion electrons per second. I like this game.

Mike Page

You need to make the Ozone Whoofler 6000, a device that makes ozone but also flaming bubbles.

Mark Trombley

Ahh, Ozone Whoosher 3000! Coz 2000 is sooo yesterday.

Wim

Yep, keep the Ozone, Ioniser, UVC, LED and light bulb videos coming! Its all interesting stuff. :)

Ross Robertson

Make the videos you want Clive! Would rather watch what you're enjoying with than what you are forcing.

Yep, I'm with Simon, I enjoy them, If you're not overdoing LED lamps, then you're definitely not over doing UV/ozone stuff, keep em coming!

William Taylor

I like the ozone and UVC videos.
