Unpotted unit. Let's reverse engineer it

This smaller vehicle-version of a recent item I explored, has an unpotted high voltage section.

Perfect for further exploration.

I really don't like the crowd that is anti Potter. Harry is just a nice guy that likes to save the world.

Jason Greene

LOL guys...I meant making the noise with your mouth...for fun! I'm very sorry! I have trouble making myself clear these days sometimes.

Michael Thompson

The BOING noise was an issue for a while with the current recording device being a bit zealous in its automatic gain control. It disappeared with an update.

Made in China, but seems to be linked to a couple of UK brands as Puremate and Heaven Fresh.

The resistor that turned green looks like a carbon film resistor if heated too much they have the tendency to turn green well the tolerance band does.

Jonathan Hughes

The microphone vibrating or the device vibrate motor running as the screen is tapped? Also Clive, where does one get one of these units, or are they a local sols product (to UK)

Anton

Keep in mind that at higher currents the diodes do run quite hot. There is a MOSFET trick for reverse polarity protection.

Big Clive

Or finding the final stage just wasn't needed.

Big Clive

High-end insulation testers feature a Guard terminal. Its purpose is to collect leakage that's not of interest to the measurement being made. It's maintained at the same potential as the negative terminal (more or less, it can matter how good this is). Say you wanted to measure the resistance between two cores of an armoured cable. You might connect the guard to the armour. It collects current leaking from the positive to the sheath, but does not include the current in the resistance calculation. Which is all strictly for the birds when you're talking about a £20 tester that doesn't even claim 61557 or have PI/DAR, and is apparently poorly designed. The presence of a Guard terminal is just showmanship.

1N5401 is rated at 3 amps

Does any else make a "boi-oi-oing" noises on the jump cuts? Maybe that's a generation thing. (54)

I meant to specify a what would be a good reverse polarity protection diode?

Louboxington

What would beva good diode to use for an 18v 1 - 2 amp circuit?

Louboxington

I've got one of those here, but stalled on making a video about it because I couldn't work out the purpose of the middle terminal either.

Big Clive

Oh, just doubting their own design? Or, perhaps, which components they could get?

nowt

I think it's just a backup option in case the voltage was too low.

Big Clive

Even the silver 0.1 multiplier has turned green.

Big Clive

Could the extra capacitor and diode stage be for a USB powered version?

nowt

Green tolerance band is ±0.5%, but I'm not sure why they'd go with that here (and you'd expect more digits in that case...).

Speaking of high voltage fun did you see the lastest "TheHWCave"? He looks a slighly sketchy mega ohm meter; there a few fun ways you can zap yourself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rE7tlQvZQqY

Peter Stevens

But that means no x-ray hammer :(

adrian

Fantastic! Press onward Clive!
